Default In a quandry

I have a 2002 x type 2.5L Auto tranny. The tranny slips if I get on the gas between 4th & 5th and throws an amber Transmission fault. If I drive like a grandpa and try an eek out 75 mpg's then the car drives fine and doesn't slip.

Took the car in to be read by Jaguar Diagnostic (not a Jag dealer) and they found the following codes from the engine DTC summary: P0734 Gear 4 incorrect ratio and P0735 Gear 5 incorrect ratio. He pulled the check level plug on the tranny and took out about two tablespoons of fluid to show me it's brown and burnt.
He recommends the tranny be replaced at $4815.

I can get a used tranny for $1000 ( car had 74000 miles) and they guarantee it works. The guy who did my diagnostics is willing to put in a used tranny for $1200 including new fluid (9.5 qts) after flush of TC but no guarantees. He said it is 16 hrs of labor to do R & R. He's done this a few times on some jags so he knows what he's doing.

Here is my quandry: If I go with the used tranny and it's bad then I'm stuck with the labor to pull it back out and try again. The salvage yard will get me another tranny since it's guaranteed to work but now it's going to cost me $3200 for another attempt. Since these cars have known tranny issues is it worth rolling the dice? On a positive note if he puts in the used tranny and it works fine then I've saved $2615. What say you?

ATK, you may want to look around. I think the tranny can be put in for a little bit less than what he is asking for. BUt then, if he has treated you right in the past, then that little bit extra may be well worth it. That is a personal judgement call.

As for putting in the used tranny, do some looking around. You can probably find one with less miles on it for less money. E-bay has a butt ton of them on there. May be able to even find one from a nearby yard and pick it up yourself to save on any S&H.

I say go for the used tranny and roll the dice.

I went ahead and installed a used transmission (the donor car had 74,000 miles but appears it's transmission had been replaced as the Tranny has a rebuilt by Jatco sticker on it, so hard telling how many miles). The cat is now purring. New seals were installed and it got a complete flush (tranny cooler brought up to operating temp so the thermostatic valve opened up to circulate the old fluid out) and fresh Jag tranny fluid added (almost 9 qts $$$$$$). The cars shifts smoothly now and no slippage in shifts. When cold on start up I can feel the shift between 1st and 2nd gear, but after it warms up it shifts so smoothly I can't feel it shift. I only notice it in the tach change.
I saved over 4 grand by not having Jaguar change out the tranny.

So if you have a transmission going in your cat, consider a used transmission you'll be glad you did!
