Hello all;

I posted another topic with this question but I am genuinely convinced that my new rotors are causing a clunking noise I am hearing when I push the brake pedal, sometimes over bumps, when I back up first and specially when its cold or raining.

Before my rotors where replaced a couple of months ago the car was making very similar noises. Once the rotors where replaced the clunking noises stopped until recently.

What brand of rotors should I try? Has anyone else had problems with aftermarket rotors?

Also could somebody offer a diagram of the front brakes and all the parts that should be there?

First things first; check the bolts that secure the brackets on. They must be properly torqued; too loose, and they'll back out, too tight and they'll stretch and either back out or just loosen up enough to cause clunks.

The are a real PITA, too; I needed an open-box-end 'socket' for my torque wrench.

They don't take a LOT of torque, they really aren't squeezed on there all that tight, but the actual amount is muy importante!

do you mean the caliper retaining bolts on the diagram above?

 

It's not the rotors. Look at the pads or calipers first. If not that, have the suspension inspected.

 

They are two 15mm that hold on the anchor plate.

 

Thanks!. Suspension has been examined to death. New Control arms, sway bar end links, no problems noises or play, no tie rod problems etc. I know I will need shocks soon, but that is not what is causing the pop/clunk noise.

Ill try the examining the calipers and pads. Thanks

hey spike. There is a round weight in the back of the brakes. Its a noise dampener or something. I had a noise and removed those and the noise was gone. Just a thought.

Spike / Dr: The round weight the good Dr. describes is part #10 / 11 in this brake diagram, and circled yellow in this picture.

It's a noise dampener / vibration suppressor. When the retaining nut loosens, the round weight makes a "thunk" noise with every bump in the road. Ask me how I know.....

Determining that the thunk noise was being caused by the loose round weight wasn't easy, because noise travels through the suspension, and these round weights are "concealed" on the inside, top of each rear caliper.

Spike describes his thunk noise as occurring with bumps, and when he brakes and reverses. The thunk from my loose weight occurred on every bump, but not when braking or reversing. So it's unclear if Spike's Jag also has a loose brake weight, but it's easy to check and rule out.

 

Hence why I normally remove those weights as one of the first things when I get a vehicle with these on it. Makes doing the brakes a bit easier and the amount of noise suppression compared to what they generate makes it a no brainer decision for me. I can't say that I have noticed much difference with them installed.

I will check this tomorrow and hope this is the noise I have been hearing.

The car was back up yesterday and no problem can be found. I am being told that my front shocks need to be replaced, but I don't think that is what is causing the clunking at stops
