Transfer care seems the weakest point to these auto tranny AWD X Types .
I also heard of remote key fob problems to earlier X Types
Others will chime in , stick with Thermo's advices

aceofspades, for the most part, I think you will find this car to be on the same level as most cars of that year when it comes to maintenance and whatnot. If you are going to have issues, it will normally rear its head in 1 of 2 spots. LIke Regent said, the transfer case is the weak link in the drivetrain. So, if you like to use the gas pedal a lot for fast accelerations and whatnot, this is going to be an expensive car for you to own. You drive sensibly, the transfer case will outlast the car. With that being said, the occassional quick get up to speed doesn't seem to be that much of a detriment. BUt, the more you get on the gas hard, the more problems you will have with the transfer case. Also, the transfer case is "filled for life". OK, now that I am done laughing at that statement, getting on a fluid change interval is a good idea. Most members have gone with a 30K mile fluid change interval. This is the trick with this fluid change out, the fill hole is blocked because it is lodged between the top of the transfer case and the block of the engine. So, you have to fill the transfer case through the drain plug. We have solutions for that, so, if you need some help, let us know.

THe other common problem that most people have is vacuum leaks. Again, through the help of this forum, we know where the leaks are and most are a $15 fix if you do the work yourself (all of them are easy to replace, a 5 year old could).

Oh yeah, one other thing that is a common problem (up to 3). The fan controller for cooling the engine is a high failure rate item. This shows its head when the car sits in still traffic for long periods of time. The electronics inside the actual control unit will fail. It is a fairly easy fix, but depending on what you can find in your area, it can be an expensive fix though too. I'm currently in the process of trying to come up with a way to "overhaul" these modules so you can fix it yourself by using a soldering iron and some basic electronics knowledge.

The other problems from my point of view are the general wear type of stuff that can be related to wheel bearings, brakes, etc.

ace, did the remote ever work since you have owned the car. Not to ask the silly question, but if someone had a new key cut for the car, they may have never programmed the remote to work with the car. If you look in the FAQ section, there is a bit about programming the remote to make the car accept the keyfob as a useable unit.

As for knowing about cars, we share a lot of information here and I tend to keep a little running tally of the problems and what was done to correct them. Makes troubleshooting vehicles a lot easier. As you have problems, post up, someone will help. If you find someone that you can help, help that person out.
