Radiator fans running constantly
Hi
I have just joined the forum and have a question. No matter whenever i start the car a few seconds later the radiator fans start running. Coolant ok. Does not get above normal on temp. Baffled as to where to start to find the fault. Any ideas. 2003 X Type 2.0 D. se.
Thanks in advance.

Could be the Coolant temp sensor for the Fan Module..I don't know where it is, I bet someone like Thermo will let you know or his suspicions as well as to what it could be...
However in the mean time..you might want to provide the YEAR and the Model Variant you have, including engine type and size..

xantic, we can help you out here. First off, let the car sit overnight (or a long period of time) so the motor is cold. Next, turn off the heat-A/C. At this point, start the car and look at the temp gauge. Is it reading low (below the C) or is it reading at midpoint or higher (towards H)? If it is reading high, then your problem is either the temp sensor or the ECU. Let me know and we will see what we can do for you with that.
If the temp is low, is the fan still running? If so, is it running full power (ie, if you were to open the hood, it would be blowing your hair all over the place) or is it just slowly spinning? The next check would be to see what voltage is on the white/blue wire. If there is no voltage, then that would confirm you have a bad fan module. If you have lots of voltage (ie, over 10 VDC), then odds are you have an ECU issue. But, odds are, you are looking at a fan module issue.

Thanks for the info.
If i leave the car overnight, A few seconds after i start it it the fans start running. Temp gauge is on nothing. it is below the blue mark.
Temp does not get above half way at all even after a good run.
I shall read the voltage and report back. Fan seems to be running fast, in fact, one of the guys in work says to me it sounds like a road sweeper coming into the yard.lol.
Obviously i would like to get this sorted as to me the fans are going to give up in the end and not only that it annoys me hearing them running all the time, apart from that the car seems fine.

xantic, from the sounds of things, you have a transistor that has failed inside the fan controller and it is applying power all the time. I would start with swapping out the fan module and seeing what you have at that point if you don't want to do the wire check I mentioned above. The fan controllers are known for failing (granted, not in the way that you have it failed). I feel the voltage check will be a defining check to lead you to either replacement of the ECU or the fan controller.

Hey thanks Thermo
I have not had chance to check things yet as the weather is bad here and no garage, Also im off to work shortly but be assured as soon as i can i will be doing the checks you said, It might be better if i could source a new fan module and swap it, Second hand of course as i hav'nt won the lottery yet.
