Default Removing the subs in the rear deck.

Can someone tell me the easiest way to access the 2 6.5" subs in the rear deck so I can properly remove them?

Jordy, remove rear seat, remove the deck covering, then slide out the subs. Unfortunately, that is how it needs to be done. The rear seat will need to come out in 2 sections. There's 2 bolts holding the bottom portion in place. Then you will need to push back and down a little bit to release the retaining clips. Then the bottom cushion will come out. From there, you will need to undo the bolts at the bottom holding the back of the seat in place. Once the bolts are out, lift up slightly and remove the back of the seat. From there, pull straight out on the rear decking. This will expose the subs.

That is the short of the removal process.

Thanks, I appreciate the response.

Sounds like a lot of work but if that's the way that it needs to be done then that's what I'll do!

I was kind of hopping the grill on the top would just pop-off but life is never that easy!

Jordy, I just checked the JTIS and it appears that all you need to do is open up the trunk, undo 6 (?) bolts from inside the trunk and the subwoofer box will come down. So, open up the trunk, climb on in and remove the bolts. No need to remove the rear seat. I thought the speakers were mounted from the top, but looking at the image of the speakers, they are mounted from the bottom. So, that should make things a lot easier.

Thermo, you described to perfection (on the first post) the way to remove the rear subs on 04-current XJs.

RealmCenter, it may be that way on the XJ's, but he was inquiring for the X-Type. Looking at the JTIS, it shows the 6.5" subs in a separate enclosure that is bolted to the bottom of the rear shelf. Every vehicle has the subs mounted a different way. I am getting into mounting separates in my X-Type in both the front and rear doors. I think this is going to be rather interesting once all is said and done. I tore the front doors apart today doing some investigation as to what will fit where. Got some interesting ideas. The hard part with my install is the tweeters are 2" tweeters. So, they have some size and depth to them.
