Default Reverse Gear

Please someone help me. My reverse went out on me and I'm not sure if it means a complete rebuild/replace or if it's simple.
It sounds like it's going in but it just revs.
I'm getting ready to spend a few thousand dollars unless someone can tell me I don't need to.
I can't find a jag mechanic around here to save my life.
I drive a 2002 X-type 2.5 automatic.
Thanks

Ba, before you go and start spending lots of money, make sure that you have the correct amount of fluid in the tranny. If you are running slightly low, it can cause the tranny to act like it is in NEUTRAL and there have been instances where it only affects certain gears. ANy reputable tranny shop should be able to do that for you. Then you can know if you need to have major work done to the tranny at that point.

Default Reverse

In addition to a fluid check, make sure your shift cable is adjusted correctly. I was having sporadic no reverse as well, a simple cable adjustment corrected.

It has been a while, but if I remember correctly mine was a simple adjustment at the transmission end. With the car on ramps and in park (and e-brake and chocked!), I made sure the shifter was well engaged in park. Then loosened the cable adjustment at the transmission and once again confirmed the shifter seated well in the park location. I then physically moved / confirmed the transmission 'centered' into park underneath at the trans shift level. I then tightened the cable, and the selected through each shifter position to confirm my adjustment. You may have to do this once or twice. It appeared mine was nothing more than a stretched cable that wasn't fully engaging each selection. You can message me for more details if you need, but it was pretty straight forward. Hope yours is this easy as well. Best of luck!

Here I am several months after starting this thread and I still don't have reverse. It's strange because all the other gears work fine.
We have tried changing the fluid, adjusting the cable etc.
What my mechanic told me, and he's not 100% sure is that I need a complete rebuild.
Sufficed to say, I no longer use my Jag as my primary vehicle. It's too bad too because it's a very nice car. I just can't park it where I may need to reverse.
If anyone out there has an idea on what else I should try before shelling out 2k for a tranny rebuild I'm all ears.
Thanks

I'm in the process of switch out tranny - everyone that u took it too they all said the same ?

Strange too me I believes is the reverse band I found in a thread some one fixed it with out pulling tranny out all they did was drill holes where the band is located & adjusted there -
