rust already?!?!
I have a 2003 X-Type and it has about 60k miles. This car looks like it just rolled of the show room floor. I mean this car looks like it is brand new-perfect! However the other day I noticed rust inside the door jams on the front of the car. Kind of like in the bottom corner near thehinge. You can not see this rust from the outside at all when the doors are shut but once you open the doors you can see it. The car does not even have a scratch on it but this rust???? Has anyone heard of this as some sort of common problem with this car??
I have an 03 as well and it is as spotless as you described yours...Like Caddy said..this is not right..get it to the dealer, as I think (don't quote me) that there is a rust warranty, that islonger than the 4 year/50k..
Take some pictures for us...
Take some pictures for us...
here is the problem. The rust is on the body of the car. (will take pics soon and post) not the hinge or anything like that. It is only on one spot on the car but on both sides. Has anyone heard of this? I will but up pics tomorrow. any tips or anyone else that had this issue would be great help.
Doesnt matter where it is. There is a corrosion warranty on vehicle which is normally 8 years unlimited mileage. Refer to your owners manual for specifics. You should be able to take to dealer and get it fixed under warranty due to the corrosion warranty. When they look up your car at the dealer, DDW will show the date of expiration for corrosion warranty.

+1 on Dennis's and FJT 's comments Jvegas.............especially if the car is mint like you say.
The corrosion warranty should kick in, job done mate

Right the Service Portfolio book says:
Paint Surface Warranty Statement
"Should the paint surface of the vehicle body requrie attention due to a defect in material or application, any necessary reapirs will be undertaken by a jaguar Authorised Repairer, completely free of charge"
"Duration of the paint surface warranty - 3 years, unlimited mileage"
6 years, unlimited mileage corrosion (perforation) warranty statement
"Should any part of the bodywork of the vehicle be perforated by rust[/b] corrosion, the panel(s) affected by the perforation will be repaired or replaced by any Jaguar Authorised Repairer, completely free of charge, regardless of any change in vehicle ownership"
"Note: the term 'perforation' means a hole that penetrates through the bodywork, caused by corrosion from inside or underside, as a result of fauly manufacture or materials"

My take on that comes down to prudent common sense on the dealer..Ifthey didn't fix the surface rust of his car now, because of the definition of rust perforation..they will indeed be fixing it later for just that, if it is left to go..like cancer...Besides, I can't imagine they wouldn't fix it anyways.
If there's rust in that area, definitely check on the underside of the door.
1.) Get it done through warranty
2.) If for whatever reason that doesn't work (which it should), do not use WD-40. It's too abrassive. I've done rust repair as the Contours love to develop rust on the underside of the doors.
What you want to do is sand down the rust, treat it with a product called rust coverter, re-sand, touch up and clearcoat. I do this every couple of years, and the rust is contained, it looks rather fine. Again, get it done through Jaguar as you should be covered.

WOW that would be great if it was covered! The only thing is the car is a 2003 so it is 5 years o;d and it has 60,000 miles on it. If I understand, rust is covered for life by Jaguar??? Is that correct?

OH ------- MY ----------- GOD.............. you guys dont read the posts enough... I have been fighting over that rust for over a year. I have posted a few times about this.
If you dare to lie down and look under the plastic side skirts on the actual rocker panel, you will come out crying. the rust starts under there and when it creeps up the A-post it means it is getting ugly.
This is an absolute common area for rust on any xtype that has actually been driven in snow. ( ummmmmmmm duuuuuuuuuuh it is an awd car.. why else would you even buy one? lol )
Jag Canada has been totally avoiding dealing with the issue, driving any customer to fits of rage if they try to bring up the issue.
I have seen pictures of some cars that took $10,000 dollars of body shop work to fix them.
the entire car is well protected EXCEPT for the rockers. Not only is it a dumb design for rust, there is no corrosion protection there at all.
It will be the path that all X-types will end up in the scrapyard because Jag is unwilling to fix it.
If you get it claimed under surface rust they might get it sandblasted and re-sprayed, but they will never go inside the rocker where the rust started and is way worse. If they do the cosmetic repair then it will never reach the perforation level by the end of that warranty. If you let it go till the last year of perforation warranty, they will do everything in their power to avoid fixing it.
there is ZERO protection inside the rocker, it is a welded closed section before the car is painted. there is just some basic primer on the inside metal before the car is welded together.
on the outside there is primer, paint, clearcoat and maybe some other layers of protection in various places. then there are holes pierced in the rocker to attach the side skirts and that lets the area fill with salt water all winter long.
I will post my long long story about this whole thing soon.. I am waiting for the final chapter to close.

That does not sound good.... my hopes...crushed.
I am going to go up to the dealer tomorrow and see what they say. I would be happy for now if they just fixed the A-frame. I will let you guys know what goes on. I seem to have a way to get things done when stuff goes wrong. I hope I can just "get it done" tomorrow. Thanks

Hopefully it works out fine...bo's dealers in Canada have been terrible for everything not just this one incident! I'm going to check about my hood rust spot as well Monday morning...Mines not terrible but like cancer it creeps up quick!

Being a new X-type owner rust was a concern for me especially living in the rust belt of the US. Has anyone had an experience with Ziebart for thier rust proofing applications? I would rather head the rust off before it becomes a "perforation" or cheese grater!

I don't know chas, if there was already any chemical reaction already started the ziebart would only seal it in there. You could always take your plastic panels off and check everything out! You plan on keeping it forever or just a couple of years?

get down on your hands and knees or whatever and find there are some biggish access holes - about an inch in diameter on each side, one half way along the rocker, one at the rear. To do the job properly you need to remove the side skirts as there are many holes for the clips that are likely starting to rust around the holes.
Flood the big holes with water use full flow of garden hose and flush flush flush whatever salt etc.. is in there, there are rocker drain holes all along the bottom seam, you will see water running out all over the place.
once you are quite confident the inside is salt free...you need to dry it in there, that will be days of hot baking sun, no rain, etc... I dont think one day of drying is enough to get it dry in there.
meanwhile you need to find the right corrosion protection. I think a wax based product is the best final coat inside. Ask around, I dont think rust-check will be any good there and FOR SURE no oil spray. Since this is a closed area, you need good protection. I really think that a high end body shop has the best products. not the quick and dirty rust shops. There may be some rocker guard paint that a good body shop can spray in with a long wand, this stuff could be either the stuff that dries hard or remains sorta soft.
Once that is dried I would then get some wax undercoating sprayed in the same way.
Some how through all this you need to make sure the small drain holes are kept clear, maybe insert a mcdonalds drinking straw into each hole before you spray the stuff in there. then pull them out when you are done.
get the idea? you want it protected, you need to do it right, anything else will only buy a few months of protection.
Just a passing FYI and I'm sure I'm singing to the choir..But I was born and raised inMichigan and Wisconsin..and of course Ziebart was the first thing you did to a new car..But wasn't a for sure prevention against all the salt and slop you get in those winters..The number one thing you can do for prevention..Is to give your car a run through a carwash (brushless type)that has the undercarriage wash down...This will help a lot, not perfect, but better than just a topical hoses down...
I hope Jaguar will fix it for you..

keep in mind that the Jaguar owners manual clearly states that if you do anything to rust protect your car it VOIDs the warranty.
they are afraid that some of the oils or sprays have solvents in them that will melt wax type undercoating... THat makes good sense, and the Jag seems well protected almost everywhere.
But for them to say you cant do anything, and then not put a drop of protection inside the rockers is ****ing retarded. If I was a lawyer I would launch a class action lawsuit over this one. It is a clear defect in manufacturing.
the rocker area has rusted from the time of horse and buggies, to have a welded closed section with all kinds of pierced holes.... and NO PROTECTION is criminal ... lol
