Shift cable?

Shift cable?
I was given a 2002 X AWD that belonged to my Great aunt, it sat all the time she was in the nursing home, and when I put a battery in it to get it home, the automatic shifter was seized so stiff that it took two bull elephants to move it, the shifter did move but it is way out of whack and it won't slide far enough to get it in park or drive, I have to put the shifter in the gate and run it in 4. Figuring I should just get a new cable, I called O'Reilly and they didn't have one listed, I do assume it is a cable.

Welcome to the forum UNCLE HOTROD,
Automatic transmission - you did press the brake pedal first to release the gearshift interlock before trying to move the lever?
I've moved your question from General Tech Help to X-Type forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

Did a quick search there are a few on ebay fro around $60
also found this one.
2002 Jaguar X-Type Auto Trans Shifter Cable (Genuine)
are you sure it is the cable? could be the linkage on the gearbox needs a little oil.
If you look under the car you will see the linkage cable attach to the gearbox there is a metal plate held on by 2 10mm bolts you can remove this plate and spray some penetrating oil and give the area a good soaking.

Yes of course I depressed the brake, i sure the cable or linkage is very sticky since my aunt passed 2 years ago, MAN was it ever hard to find the right spot to get in with the Slim Jim to unlock it with a dead battery, for future reference to others, the passenger rear door has a 2 inch target to hit that works. I'm going to get it up on the ramps tomorrow, does the shift cable adjust at the gearbox? Or up at the automatic shifter? I'm also thinking, if I can't find a new cable, I'm doing an oil change, maybe I should pull the cable and let it sit over night in the pan of drain oil.
