MSOS, yes, Bilstiens are the manufacturer for our stock shocks from off the assembly line. But, what I would tell you to do is to go to the Bilstien website and find their conversion chart. You can get a wider selection of shocks (comfort, sport, heavy duty, etc) that will fit our cars. Then you can get "factory" parts for a bit less and get the ride that you are after.
Of note, every manufacturer tells a place like Bilstien how they want a set of shocks setup for their application. This is normally a compromise between the desires of the 18 year old "sport" driver and the 70 year old grandpa. By removing that mish-mash of compromise, you can get the feeling that you like.
Unfortunately, when it comes to shocks, you are going to get what you pay for. The Bilstiens will last a lot longer than say your $40 Monroe's. So, you can pay $100 once for good quality shocks or $40 twice for shocks that "do the job". Sure, it is a little bit more overall, but what is the value of a busted knuckle and spending time under the car having to put new shocks in?
Your call.

Pffft...
I used to own a 96 Nissan 240SX, and the parts department wanted $400 per shock (!)
Needless to say I went aftermarket, and got all four corners for what Nissan wanted for one. It was really stupid. I guess the 240SX was such a limited run model that they don't have a lot of parts inventory built up. I was wondering if the X-Type shocks were anywhere near as expensive. Even with the Jaguar dealer markup, $100 a shock seems like a relative bargain to me.
I guess it all depends on your perspective. :-)

Here's the scope on the dealer prices, now I do get a discount through a shop so these are adjusted prices, the OEM shocks came in as 120 frt/117 rr and I assume this is a comfort type shock. There was a sport shock available and it came in as 101 frt/117 rr. Dealer could not tell us what these were listed as (comfort, tour, HD).
auto parts whse online even has them cheaper and the prices reflect the type of shock as above. (can't beat online, less overhead I guess)
The bilsteins numbers the dealer could not cross ref. I could not find an alternative shock (Koni, KYB, Monroe), Bilsteins's after market appx 390 comfort, 639 HD. eshocks web site.
So for the $, the Bilsteins after market comfort seem to be the best deal, providing they last the longest due to build quality.
Has anyone tried the comfort Bilsteins?

I need some new rear shocks. Are there 2 or 3 types of Bilsteins for the X? I saw sport and comfort on a couple websites. I am assuming sport is the most firm, then touring a little softer, and comfort for the lazyboy feel. Where can I get touring for the X? Looks like they only cost a little less than $100 each.
