Default Son of a ........

Ok well now one of the worst part on the car broke today. As I arrived home from work I smelt antifreeze and so I poped the hood to see what was leaking. Low and behold it was the nip ple on the back side toward the firewall broke off and coolant was every where. Luckily it happened somewhere close to home so the motor never got hot. 1 I was wondering what that line runs to. It runs from the tank to the pass side it to a metal connector that is elevated with 1 hose to the motor and the other to the radiator. Is this a pressure releas hose or what is it? 2 Is there anyway in this world to repair it or do I just have to replace the whole tank. Is it 2 pieces or 1? I know that if anyone would know it would be you guys. It is just something to see the whole top of the tank to be 1 solid peice. Oh well gotta love it and still wouldn't trade my jag for anything. Thanks guys!!

Mine did the same thing, I found the factory replacement for around 200.00. Not as expensive as I thought. Very simple replacement to do yourself as well. BUT make sure when you do it that after adding antifreeze start the car let it run and air will bubble out, top up as nessecary but keep the car running until it reaches temp. and also until no more air bubbles out.

southernjag, the hose that you are talking about (one back against the firewall) is a constant vent line. So, the engine is always purging a small amount of coolant out that line to help keep the engine air free.

Unfortunately, unless you can glue the piece back into place (not great chances due to using the nylon plastic), you are stuck putting a new bottle in there. Like was mentioned, the job is easy. I would think most people with even basic screw driver abilities can replace a bottle like that.

I tried the 2 part epoxy to glue it. As soon as it reached tempature and a bit of pressure it blew apart. So replacement is the only option.

Good thing, no damage to the engine but I back the idea of replacement in such components otherwise you may not be so lucky next time

I was able to replace the nipple by cutting the surface flush with a hacksaw. Then drilling the hole to 5/16 inch diameter. I then used a 1/8 inch pipe tap to tap the hole.

I screwed in a brass pipe nipple that I purchased at homeless depot. I made sure to screw it in 3/4 of the way, that way, it seals perfectly, but it's not so tight as to crack the tank.

Works perfectly.

However, my tank has since cracked on the other side. Once that plastic starts going, it's time to replace it.

Thanks guys. I didn't figure it would be able to be repaired just was trying to find a temp fix to not be down to 1 car. That said a few hours I posted that I did order a new tank. I think I would have a problem replacing it as it does look like a simple task. So that really wasnt the issue. I had it 2 dayed and so it will hopefully get here sooner, but of course it has to happen on a holiday weekend. I ordered the tank from partsbuddy.com. It was a preety good price. Thanks for all the input though guys. Yeah I will get the new tank mounted in no time and be back to rollin in the black jag. I really need to post updated pics.
