Ian,
The fixings on either side of the centre pad (airbag & horn) are Hex... so you need set of metric allen keys for those. You need to depress the pad slightly on each side to fully insert the hex key.
Note: The two securing screws are captive and do not come out fully (as you may expect) just keep unscrewing until the pad is released on both sides.
Please be careful if you have not disarmed the Airbag beforehand. There are procedures to follow when electrically disconnecting the Airbag - so be cautious there.
Once you have the Pad/Airbag out the way, the main securing bolt used for the steering wheel is Torx. (T25)
