Default Stereo troubles

My wife and I bought a 2003 X-Type from a private couple. At one time the other couples wife left the lights on and drained the battery. They didn't do a gradual charge but a quick boost to start it and let the alternator charge the battery.
Since then the radio has not worked and would not display the security code prompt for the stereo. After toying around with it a few times by disconnecting the battery, turning the key to the start position and draining any residual power. I was able to get the radio to work but am unable to change stations or set the clock, the CD player works, but we have to put a cd in before the car is started and remove the cd after we turn the car off.
I contacted a local small electronic repair company and he said the processor in the radio may be fried or needs reset. If it needs reset does anyone know how to do this. Any and all help is appreciated, thanks very much.

Welcome to the forum dasnyder70,

I've moved your question from Jaguar Forums Advice / Feedback & Suggestion Center to X-Type forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

Pull the radio fuse, and let it sit for a day or two. replace the fuse and see if it has 'gone stupid'. Then, simply reprogram the radio and clock.

It is a shot in the dark; some will clear, some will not. There is a capacitor that holds up the memory in the microprocessor, and sometimes, they will hold up the programmed entries for a very long time, so this may or may not work, but at least the price is right!

It is very unlikely that you will need a radio code; Jaguar does not code North America spec'd radios. In the unlikely event that you do need a code, it is possible to get it through Jaguar directly, or there are services who can calculate it for you. (it uses the VIN and the radios serial number.)

If that doesn't work, let me know; I can likely get the reset sequence for the unit if somebody here doesn't pop in with it.

edited to add: press the [A.MEM], [>>] and [PTY] keys simultaneously. This should reset the radio back to factory.

Ok, I will try pulling the fuse out. Great time, my wife and one of our daughters are going to the beach for a few days and the car will be at home.

I tried pulling the fuse and I completely disconnected the battery for 24 hours still no go. Before I did this I did the suggestion with the three keys on the unit still no luck. Anything else you might be able to suggest, I'm not afraid to get "dirty".

It does sound like a microprocessor problem. You might still try the three button reset again; disconnect the power, then reconnect.

If it asks for a code, press any 4 numbers. Do that three times.

It should then read 'Please Wait'. At that time, press the three buttons, and hold them for 5 or 6 seconds.

That SHOULD reset the processor without clearing your memory. Also, if you had a CD in when the battery went down, put the same CD back in first; that disc's info may be stored in the memory, and the thing is confused because it can't see the disk.

Where in PA are you?

Ok, I will give it a try. I am in Clearfield PA, Clearfield County about 2.5 hours East of Pittsburgh and 50 minutes from Penn State. Only problem is I don't know if we still have the cd that was stuck in the car when we bought it, I will have to look. Thanks for helping me out, if this does not work I guess I will get one off ebay or a whole new stereo.

I am totally at a loss here. I ordered a unit off ebay and guess what the same thing is happening to this radio as with the old one. Any suggestions as to what is wrong?

Clearfield PA, about 2.5 East of Pittsburgh and 50 minutes West of Penn State.
I just read of fixya.com about the same problem. Turns out the steering wheel radio control was stuck leaving it in constant search and in turn stuck on the strongest signal. I noticed our control seems to "push" down but does not seem to be able to "push" up as if to change the radio station up. How do you remove the control unit from the steering wheel?

I read on fixya.com about someone who had the same problem as I am having. Apparently the steering wheel audio controls got bumped leaving the radio in constant search and "stuck" on the strongest signal leaving the stereo "froze". I looked at our control and it does appear that the "tune up" will not toggle like the "tune down" does. If this is the case, will it harm anything if I disconnect the steering wheel control and do you think the stereo will then work. If so I will order a new control and install it. Your input will be appreciated.
Thanks Dan
