Just bought an X type Jaguar 2002 model 2.1 V6. It had an engine check light on.


Fault code reading showed up P 1647 on my fault code reader. This indicates an O2 sensor. So I bought the part and a local garage offered to fit for next to nothing. In the meantime he also put the car on his advanced fault code reader.


It turns out the sensors are working as it should. However it said there was a module short circuit.


Can anybody shed some light on this problem? It's driving me nuts now and as the garage said its pointless buying new sensors if its a module problem.

Either he made a mistake and not quite working right or it's maybe intermittent. The latter may prove very painful......

 

The Jaguar list for P1647 gives the following possible causes:

HO2 Sensor 2/1 heater failure
HO2 Sensor 2/1 sensing circuit: short circuit to ground, short circuit to high voltage, open circuit
ECU Failure

If the sensor itself is OK then you'd have to hope it's a damaged wire from the sensor that's broken or shorting somewhere. While not impossible, I don't recall any accounts of anyone having to replace their ECU for this fault code.

Despite the garage's assurances, I'd change the sensor before the ECU!

 

It is also very important to use the right oxygen sensor, because even though other parts might fit, the computer might see something wrong with them. There is also the posibility that he changed the wrong one. Check the following guide:

Try to see if the sensor that corresponds to your fault is the one he changed.

At the beginning I just want to say Hello, because this is my first post.

I just bought the X-type 2.5 auto, and have several errors... the current "biggest problem" is fuel consumption.... 10 mpg.... I know that this is not normal.... and its too high. I was sure that the reason of this fuel consumption was O2 sensor, but I changed both with the original denso and the problem is still the same. (there was no error stored on ecu about o2 sensors). But last time I saw something interesting , usually while driving I saw red lights from brakes (P),and (!) and in this same moment I don`t see on my trip computer correct value of mpg and some other info like TRIP: A, TRIP: B there is nothing only horizontal lines.

Well I think it is time to start banging my head against a brick wall. I had both sensors changed.Engine light reset etc. Then a mile after driving home it's back on again with the same error code from the reader!


Now the interesting thing is that the Garage gave the car a free smog test. Both sensors working as they should and the smog test was fine and the car past on all accounts. Yet it still shows a lambda sensor code even though there is nothing wrong with them. Car drives absolutely fine with no issues. Do I get a big stick and start hitting it? The code is still p1647.

 

All the successful smog test shows is that everything was OK at the time of test - which you knew because the engine light was not on then! If it's an intermittent fault, there's no easy solution, because the fault might clear, but the light will stay lit until it's cleared. It's unlikely to clear itself as the fault may keep recurring!

Can you check the wires to the sensor with a meter for shorts or grounds while flexing/pulling them? The wires run directly from the sensor to the ECU, except the White/Red one that is 12 v with ignition On. Details of Pin Nos available if you need them, but Page 3.1 of this link shows the wiring diagram for the 1/2 sensor.

To clarify the engine light was on when the smog test was done. That's why its such a pain to identify! The engine light was on so the garage did a smog test first. All sensors working as they should. I still had the sensors changed as a precaution.


My guess is that there is possible a slight grounding problem which causes the ecu to show a fault. As it is the car functions as it should with no hiccups. It's just bloody annoying to see that obstinate light grinning back at me!!
