In our 03 X-TYPE 2.5 I was Just wondering what the strange low frequency hum coming from under the steering wheel. With the switch off and nothing running. It sounds like a small sylinoid. Is it the alarm system?? I figure someone on the site knows about this one.

If i understand where you hearing the noise it should be coming from the internal temperature sensor. This is that small square looking place with 3 slats under the instrument cluster and to the right of the steering wheel(LHD). I think there is a small fan in there circulating air to the sensor. This noise is not problematic. Just a little added character that our car has.

 

Myjag is right, there is a fan in there to measure the cabin air temp. They make noise when they get dirty, so I just took compressed air to mine to clean it out

 

Just get a small screwdriver, remove the little vent from the dashboard and you'll see the sensor and fan will be covered in dust and fluff, a vacuum or compressed air will clean it up. Will make the fan quieter.

 

See...that is what I dig about the forum. All you have to do is paint a little picture with a small description and whala! you get 3 or 4 post of owners that know exactly what you are talking about. Thanks guys, I will do the required maintainence tomorrow.
