Temp gauge peaked out but no coolant loss?
Hi Guys,
Well, this one has never happened before. Took a road trip today to drop off a friend at an airport and on the way home i saw my temp. gauge was pegged out in the red and my engine light came on. I did not notice the car running sluggish or any associated smells with a hot engine but pulled over into a gas station to check things out. I pop the hood thinking I am going to see an empty coolant container and i was wrong. Full just like it should be. Then the sniff test for the burning engine smell and nothing. Plus I do not feel any heat radiating out from under the hood. I crawl on the cement to look for leaks under the car and none. I have never had this happen before? So what came to mind is maybe my thermostat was acting up or maybe a bad temp. sensor?
Anyhow, I started the car back up and the temp gauge was back to normal (meaning it sits right a smidge below the mid point). I ran My OBD code reader and it came back with a code I can't remember right now, but it said "temperature something?" I cleared the check engine light, got back on the highway and it ran just like normal the rest of the way home. Thank god!!!!
However, as I am planning a long drive on an upcoming move my instincts tell me the problem just won't magically go away and needs to be addressed. Since the engine was not hot I would assume it is not a fan issue so all I can think of is a temp sensor is on the blink or the thermostat is on the blink and got stuck for a brief moment?
Any help appreciated, advice or if you know what the problem is please feel free to help me out here because I need to address this pronto.
Thanks for listening
peace out,

I would lean towards a failing temperature sensor.
Another symptom of a problem with the coolant temperature sensor is an overheating engine. The coolant temperature sensor can also fail in a manner that causes it to send a permanently hot signal. This can cause the computer to incorrectly compensate for a lean signal, which can result in overheating, and even misfires or engine ping.

4. Check Engine Light comes on
An illuminated Check Engine Light is another symptom of a potential problem with the coolant temperature sensor. For some vehicles the computer will set off a Check Engine Light if it detects a problem with the sensor’s signal or circuit.
Could it be an air pocket from a small crack in the coolant bottle? That is what one mechanic just suggested to me via messenger. He also said I should pressure test. I told him i don't see any coolant leaking out and the bottle looks full but he said that doesn't mean coolant is in the block? Kind of confusing. Just so weird that your gauge can peak out at what should be boiling hot...and then find nothing wrong under the hood...no smells, coolant still there. It does seem like the temp sensor to me followed by possible thermostat.

BTW....is this the location of it? I took off my engine cover and this seems to be where it is?
