Default thermostat question xtype 3.0 2002

so i have had a leak for a while now and its not the radiator or the water pump. One day when i was changing the oil i looked up and saw that coolant was coming from some plastic tubing. Now i know the thermostat is plastic but is their a bypass hose also? Because the thermostat is not directly connected to the engine as most vehicles have the thermostat directly inserted in the engine itself.

eric, the thermostat is located right behind the radiator in the line running from the radiator to the motor. You will see a little "football" looking piece in the hose. There is no bypass hose around it that I am aware of. The disc for the thermostat has a small hole drilled in it to allow a minimum amount of flow.

So if i am to replace the faulty gasket it would be the thermostat gasket? not another type or kind.

eric, there is no gasket on the thermostat. It is a solid plastic piece that has metal internals. Then the rubber hoses clamp on to each end. If you are looking at one of the coolant lines on top of the engine, then there may be a gasket there, there may not. Depends on the point that you are looking at.

Thanks for your input. Maybe the clamps are just loose. but seems to be antifreeze/coolant dripping from the bolt and nut facing the ground from the thermostat. and i know its not the thermostat because the car does not heat up and temps are always accurate.

See if this looks familiar:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...nt-leak-38696/
(sorry, there may be a better way to track back to it)

I've had the same leak for a few months...

Bought the gasket that seals the upper hose/thermostat assembly to the engine block, but couldn't get to all the bolts to unclamp the 'C' bracket holding it in place...

Haven't heard if anyone has successfully done it.

Not yet. Kind of limping along, hoping for a more experienced member to post.
I did find (on this forum) the Ford cross-reference for the Jag orange coolant, so I picked up a gallon at a Ford dealership for ~$35 and I just top it off every week or so.
If you find out or hear otherwise, please post the solution here.
Thanks!

dang really? but it couldnt be the thermostat o ring right? because all i can see is the plastic connected to the other piece of plastic with those 3 screws have the leak. I will probably try to get the thermostat gasket and see if that works but ill have to see,

Hi,

i have to change the thermostat in my x-type 2.5,
Thermo wrote that it is located "right behind the radiator".

it it possible to get access to the thermostat when the front of the
car is on ramps? is this enough space for changing it?

thanks a lot.

regards from austria!

Austria, yes, if the front of the car is on ramps, you can access the thermostat. You will need to remove the cover off of the bottom of the car, but once you do that, you will have all sorts of room to work in there.

Just remember to drain the coolant first so you don't end up taking a shower as you are doing the job. As it is, you may still get some on you. If you are laying on your back, staring up at the motor with your feet sticking out the front of the car, raise your right hand and follow the radiator to the right (running your hand on the curved edge near the engine). Near the corner of the radiator, you will feel a small object sticking out of the radiator with a flat blade on it. that is the radiator drain valve. You will get about 8 liters (2 gallons) of fluid out.
