Thinking of getting an X type. Any advice.
Hey guys, im new here. Well i was thinking of getting an 02-04 X type as a daily driver. Is there any major mechanical problems to be expected with an Jag X type? Im just trying to make an informed decision before i buy. I will be looking at about a 2002-03 with 30-40K miles. Is there any major recalls or things that need to be replaced at that point besides the basic maintainence?
How about repairs? Im pretty sure anything on the drive train would be expensive since its an AWD.
Any tips/suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated.

[:@] DON'T.... I've had mine for almost 4 years.... I have never had so many problems as I have had with this car. First, the metals for the driveshaft were incompatible with the seals so when it got cold - squeak squeak squeak.... replaced 3x, the dash defrost vents - pop-up even AFTER the new design change, the rear axle was just replaced, the rear drive shaft replaced, the ABS went out - 2x, the sun roof leaked into the driver floor well, I could keep going but ou get the idea.
Now with all that is wrong with it, I still like to drive it - this is the absolute longest I have owned a vehilce and I am approaching 48K miles - yeah I know - warraty runs out....
I have been checking costs for the warranty repairs / replacements - probably could have bought a Mustang now.....
Be warned - it's not well built, it is fun, get the 3.0 or sport version.
It IS very well mannered in the snow and ice - impressive there...

Dude, the new 05 x type 3L rocks! Worth every penny I spent on her....well not every penny but wish she was maybe a bit cheaper and should have bought the 19 inch rims and the hyper torque arm assembly with dual coil mag with flux capacitor......
When I hit 88 mph she sings to me like a pretty redhead up on stage with vocals so soft and sexy I just melt in her warm heated lap as she gently rubs my throbbing..................
Sorry got carried away.......can you tell how much I love her!

THE X-TYPE COSTS MORE PER VEHICLE FOR JAG IN WARANTEY COSTS THEN THE XJ8/XK8 AND S-TYPE COMBINED,THEY ARE THE BIGGEST OVER PRICED SUDO-LUXERY CAR OUT THERE..AND BY THE WAY THEY ARE COSTING JAG SO MUCH IN WARRANTY THAT THEY ARE GETTING RID OF THE X-TYPE FOR 2007 SO MY ADVISE TO YOU IS GET A 3 SERIES BMW.

Yes, it can get expensive, especially for an all wheel drive transmission. It's like any car, it will cost you nowadays for labor, at 90 dollrs and hour, changing the spark plugs will be an expensive task!....Get the 05, if your budget allows you. You won't regret it....
I was a bit nervous in the being and reading bad post doesn???t help. Go with what your gut tells ya!

Get used with Select Edition warranty
Got one with 13k miles and warranty to 6 years/100k miles. I won't keep it that long even though it is better than my 2001 Audi.
I would skip the 2002 & 2003 at this point because the extended warranty won't last too long based on time.
And remember, every manufacturer can build a crappy car.

My thoughts are this, you can buy any sensible car under 20K. There's the Saturn???s, fords and a few others lesser cheaper cars that offer a better warranty like the new Hyundai's that have a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty. All good cars, they just don't have any sex appeal. The Hyundai will get you to the same place as a Jaguar, but you'll never be the talk of the town in a Hyundai.
People will say, Hey look at Jim ol boy there, he's so sensible and bought a boring Hyundai with a great warranty and he's so lucky.......front wheel drive, under powered, and just nothing to it, yeah ol Jim sure is smart with his money.
Then there's the Jaguar seen, Hey look at ol Mike there he's drive a Jag...wow, he must have hit the lottery or something.....dude, that car is sweet......dude you rock! The X-type! Wow, is that like a secret car or something......??? Not to mention the 230hp v-6 3.0L 5 speed auto trans, all wheel drive, power everything, moon roof, leather seats, fantasic handling and ride control and the great sex appeal the car has with woman! WOW! All the the girls want a ride in your Jag.....can't count the time girls at work that normally don't talk to me all of a suddenly want a ride in one......won't get that out of a Hyundai.....my secert is that it was only 10k more than the Hyundai. You got the cash, you spend it wisly.....just like i did! Oh and say hello to Debbi here boys....met her last night.....and my jag took her home to my place...she left her boyfriend who was driving that other piece of junk...oh what was the name of that car......oh yeah a BMW.
I'll take my chances on higher repair bills after my 5 year warranty expires on the jag. Hell by then, I???ll be in 2009 jag!!

It's all cool. I don't have a problem with your opinion, everyone has one. They are as common as the hole in the ***. Your caps bother me though.

RE: Get used with Select Edition warranty
I just bought a 2002 xtype back in 10/05 and absolutely love it. I haven't had any major issues as of yet (knock on wood). I did have the vents replaced at my last service. As of today I am having an issue with my drivers side lock but it is getting fixed tomorrow at the dealership under warranty. I'm 2K mileas away from the end of my warranty so I hope if something goes wrong, go wrong now. I have read about alot of people having issues with their xtype, the most major issue I've come across is the transmission, which there was a TSB issued for that which should be fixed by the dealership.

RE: Get used with Select Edition warranty
I have had a lot of experience with an 05 x-type. It is a 2.5 with a 5 speed manual. Its actually a pretty fun car. No, the 2.5 isn't going to plant your head in the headrest but it moves enough for normal driving, and enough power to hang the back end out around corners. I could only imagine how fun it would be to drive with a supercharger and some suspension work to get rid of the roll, nose dive, and squat. Negatives would be the shitty stereo and the somewhat cheap looking center console. Other than that, its a pretty good car. Oh yea, we never had a problem with it, even with the bouts of spirited driving - it took abuse from a guy that used to race E-types and currently races his 911 and the x-type smiled the whole time.
