Default Tire Noise??

I've noticed that, in the past several weeks, I'm getting an annoying humming noise when I travel at interstate speeds in my X. Its an 06 with about 22K miles, and 17" Continentals (OEM) on it. The tires seem to be wearing normally. I've got no steering wheel shake at all, and, the car tracks perfectly. Is it normal for these Contis to get noisy when they get some age and miles on them. I've gotten used to the driveline whine, but, the humming is driving me batty.

I've never been a fan of the Contis. I've had them on two other cars, and hated them more than anything. I've got goodyear eagle f1s on the car now, which are somewhat noisey, but are 18s. The size may have a little to do with it, but I'll take these over the Contis any day. I was quite happy with the lack of noise from the stock Potenza, but their dry performance was terrible when you pushed them.

I cant see past the Pirelli P zeros ..............they last well, stick like Sh*t to a blanket and have no issues with noise or uneven wear

Some noise should be expected...also sometimes pavement on the express way is different than the regular pavement your drive on which would make different noises than the other pavements...you may think I'm crazy everyone but driving the 800+ miles I've driven in the last days I've driven on many different pavements some louder than others...

I also don't like the stock conti's...I'm a bfgoodrich fan...

I've experienced some of the various tire noises the X makes on diferent kinds of pavement - but this is different. It occured to me today that it sounds exactly like I'm running studded snow tires. Could I be losing the center bearing on the driveshaft, or, a wheel bearing??

Hey oldengineer..... why not take it into one of your trusted tyre dealerships in your area and ask them to check for tyre wear, wheel bearing noise etc etc. They usually do this for free and then quote a price once they've diagnosed the problem!
You don't have to go with the quote and will get free "expert" advice

Excellent suggestion. There's only one independent that I trust - who's been consistently able to balance 16" + wheels and get them right on the money. Will make an appointment for next week.

Thanks:

Thats what I'd do but I can't say I trust any tire supplier by me...they all try to rip you off...belle tire is the biggest scam...they are just like some have described the jag dealers to be...they lead you to believe its 4 other things wrong before finding the actual problem...

I just don't post as much as I used to. Still lurking around though. May have fixed my problem on Saturday. Took the Jag to a Goodyear store and had it aligned. Both the front and rear were out, and, it was just starting to wear the front tires funny.
