Default Tranny Questions

Ok, to update the situation. 2002 X-Type 3.0 Auto Transmission. Have been driving 2 years since problem started. Definition of Problem: Transmission would slip to neutral in all gears under rapid acceleration but would pick the gear back up upon lifting foot from accelerator and I still could drive it so long as I progressed slowly up to whatever speed I desired. In the last week it has started slipping without recovery, so she's pretty much a rock in the driveway.

Question: Can clutches be tightened without replacing the entire transmission?
Question #2: If I replace the tranny will the computer have to be re-booted at a Jag shop or will it just pick up on the new tranny?
Question:#3 Could it be a torque converter problem and not a transmission problem? It downshifts flawlessly and never did jerk going up or down the gear progression?
Question: #4 Can a torque converter be replaced without replacing the tranny
Question #5 Would I still have to have the control computer re-booted by a dealer if the torque converter was replaced?

Suggestions Welcome I hate to loose my Jag, but so far what I've heard is the repair bills will far exceed the value of the car. I'm all ears. Thanks

What DTCs are stored in the TCM??? You should start there. A regular OBDII code reader will probably not read anything other than an engine module.

Despite being sealed for life units the gearboxes do need topping up, or even a complete fluid change. Your problems could be the effects of low fluid.
This would be a quick and cheap first option to check.

I had some gear change problems and the gearbox control unit was diagnosed as the problem .. Jag wanted to sell me a new one for muchos dollars (muchos pounds over here) I did order a SH one but my mechanic wasn't convinced this was the fault... Which was traced to a broken wire in the loom.

Don't always assume the most expensive of problems.

I checked the tranny fluid and did one drain and replace cycle as was suggested here. I saw absolutely no difference so I didn't continue the drain and refill instructions given on this web site. My tranny will shift without problem, but the clutches will not hold the gear.

To get that done Bob I'm going to have to take it to a Jag shop. Unfortunately the nearest with a Jag code reader is 37 miles away. So, I'm going to have to rent a trailer and make an appointment I guess.

So I'm wondering at this point what is best done, to buy a remanufactured tranny, a rebuilt tranny, or a used tranny out of a running car? I'm pretty sure we're going to hear clutch problems which would mean rebuilding or replacing this transmission according to what I understand. I need to get this project done for $1500 or less or start parting out the car. I'd hate to do that but it's just not economically feasible to spend $3000 which exceeds the value of the auto. thanks, Tom

Replacing the clutches is easy and cheap. Check the site. I believe someone did it for under 100 bucks

I have tried to find anything on clutch replacement on this site under the x-type forum, but found nothing, or I'm looking in wrong place with the wrong words. Can you point to "replacing clutches" you refer to. I fail to find the reference. thanks, TOM
