Default Trans. specialists , please help

Having just replaced the transfer case on my wifes 2005 X-type 3.0, the car runs fine in all forward gears now but will hardly move in reverse. What went wrong? did the transfer case take out the trans. too. I'm really beside myself after all the cost of the correct transfer case, shipping, labor and all the b.s.. Wow I really need some help here. Tell me what to do. thanks-Russ

Who changed the transfer case? I believe there is bolt on the gearbox that looks like a drain plug but is in fact a fitting for reverse gear. If the bolt is loosened in error then reverse no longer works.

This is great to know. My 07 is presently in the shop getting a replacement t-case so if I have a similar problem I will have them check the bolt. Thank you.

Just a minute....once that bolt for the reverse (the reduction band anchor bolt) is loosened instead of the check bolt (they look similar and are close together - but the check bolt has a female head and the anchor bolt has a male head) then the transmission needs major work - it is not a simple matter of putting the bolt back in. From the Raybestos technical bulletin on the Jatco JF506E transmission: "Once the reduction-band anchor is removed, the band will move out of place, which causes the transmission to seriously slip in forward gear and to lose reverse. Fixing this means dropping and disassembling the transmission."
Make sure your transmission shop has this information - the Raybestos bulletin shows the position of both the correct drain bolt and the nearby check plug.

I checked with the mechanic and he is positive he didn't take off or loosen the reverse reduction band anchor bolt. As I stated the car runs an shifts as it should in all forward gears but slips and shudders in reverse. You can feel it go into reverse when the shifter is moved to reverse, but it will slip like crazy. Would another bad transfer case cause this? The transfer case and trans are 2 completely separate units, that's why we can't figure out how the bad transfer case would have taken out the trans.

How do we check to see if the replacement transfer case is bad or really something gone wrong in the transmission?

After checking with a couple trans shops he deals with, they all say the trans took a dump. He's got a low mileage used one being shipped. I hope that's the end now. Thanks for the input and suggestions everyone. Russ

Apparently there is a TSB about the reverse clutch lip seal getting torn. Reverse goes out. It can be fixed without removing the tranny, too, apparently.

I could not find the TSB people were tlking about. I found one for 2002 X-types, but that was for the reverse clutch piston, and seemed to affect forward shifts.
