X Type remote failings
I have a 2004 2.0d X type which I have owned for just over a year. I had two working remotes with it. One stopped working shortly after purchase and even though I tried the new battery and reprogramme, it has not worked since (doesn't remotely unlock) The other remote had worked ok until recently but this has been failing as well. I have changed the battery and reprogrammed it which had worked for a day or so, but then would need to be programmed again. It has now stopped working altogether. I have had the micro switches replaced on the first remote, but still no joy. Has anybody got any ideas, as without the remote, I have to unlock manually and put the key in the ignition before the alarm goes off, which can be quick sometimes. Thanks

Eddy, sounding like the electric switch in the driver's door is loose and if the computer does not see the lock as being in a given position, it will prevent the remote from operating. You can prove this by placing the key in the door and then rotating the key only part way towards say lock (enough to get the key to move, but not enough to make the door actually lock) and then return it to the center position slowly. You can then attempt to unlock the vehicle. If you do some playing by taking the lock in the lock and unlock directions and positioning the switch some, you will find that you can make the remote work again. But, it will only work until the locks are repositioned. Then you have to play with the key again. The real fix is to get into the door and tighten down the electric switch so it is in a fixed position again.

Hi Thermo, thanks for your reply. I have tried to mess about with the key in the lock, however, as I changed the battery last time in the fob, I cannot check if this is the issue due to the fob needing to be re programmed. You say the switch in the door itself. Can I ask where the switch would be located ? is it near the lock barrel assembly and would it be relatively easy to access ?
Thanks again
Thanks again

You've had the micro switches replaced, so before you do anything else try reprogramming the fob.... The instructions are online... But... One thing I found when doing this.. Leave the drivers door open.. Given that you're in the US it might be the front passenger for that needs to be open while reprogramming... Don't know why the door needs to be open but it does.

eddy, the switch that I am referring to is located on the key tumbler in the door. So, it is going to be tucked up fairly high in the door, above the door latch. As long as the window is rolled up, it shouldn't be that difficult to access as there are a few openings in the door structure to give you access to that area.

I have on key fob that's unprogrammed (unlocks, locks, etc.- but doesn't start the ignition, just shows the security failed, which is why it has a regular key attached to it for the ignition). That'd be my spare. And then I have my main key (does everything). Every once in a while, my main key says 'security failed'. I just take it out and try again, and it works. Only has happened once or twice in the last year. I hope you get it fixed. It sounds like you did a lot of fixing on those two key fobs to no avail. Could be a problem other people run into. There's always the option of just getting a new key fob online. You'll find plenty of them that are expensive, and then plenty that are cheap. Good luck.
