robiwan, in short, you have to refill the transfer case through the drain hole. Now, as how you go about this, you have 3 options that we have used:
1) tilt the driver's side up (about 24 inches as measured from the bottom of the door sill) so that you make enough room to put in the needed fluid, or,
2) one of the members had a kit that he had made that consisted of a check valve and a hose. From there, you connected up the hose and this overroad the checkvalve and let the fluid drain. Then you simply forced the fluid backwards through the hose to refill. Or,
3) you can get your hands on a radiator drain valve with a collar on the t-handle and then adapt it from the 1/4" NPT threads up to 1/2" NPT threads. From there, you open the valve to drain the fluid out and then you can run a piece of tygon down through the engine bay and put it into the collar of the valve. From there you can dump in the fluid you need and shut the valve once and equilibrium level is reached.
All 3 work. It is a matter of which method works for you.

My method, works for me though YMMV.
Place catch pan under xfer case.
Remove plug on the side of the xfer case. Nothing will spill out.
Jack the passenger side ( US ) up so the door sill is 22 inches up.
Now the old fluid will drain out. If not you were really low on fluid.
Let that side back down
Switch to the drivers side ( US ) and jack it up 22 inches.
Fill through the drain hole until the fluid starts overflowing.
Put the plug back in.
Remove the catch pan
Let the vehicle back down.
Done.
This is just basic, You can use jack stands or cinder blocks as needed for your safety.

>Can the car be jacked the 20" off the ground with the tire jack or do I need a bigger jack.
I wouldn't recommend it regardless of whether the jack can go that high.
You're going to have to get under the car and that jack seems kind of spindly to put much trust in.
