Default Transfer case

Hello all, I have an 02 x type that just hit 100,000 miles. There has been a lot of posts on here about weak transfer cases so I wanted to do a fluid change. My car is running fine but i want to be safe down the line. Also, I wanted to do my tranny fluid because when accelerate around a slow corner it sometimes lurches. I called jaguar to check pricing and they said they don't do fluid changes since they are both sealed units. So what should I do? Just leave it until it breaks or go against the dealership and change the fluids? Thanks guys

Been a lot of talk about changing fluids lately, but yup the dealer does not like to do it.

Check the list there are multiple threads about doing both. The tranny is kind of complicated since not all the fluid drains out when the plug is removed (stuff remains in the torque converter and the transmission cooler and multiple flushes are necessary to change it all, and the ATF is expensive...).

The t-case even more so since the filling plug is inaccessible on the top of the case (squeezed against the bottom of the engine).

Good luck

Spookey, change the fluids!!!!!! The transfer case is the easier of the two. The big thing is you need to look on here for some of the methods we have come up with. There are 3 choices that most have gone with:
1) check valve offered by one of the members
2) radiator drain valve with an adapter to make fit
3) leaning the car by placing the drivers side of the car in the air about 24 inches off of the ground (as measured from the bottom of the door sill).

You need to add in 550 ML of 75W-140 full synthetic gear lube once you have drained out all you can with the car sitting level.

As for the tranny, again, not a hard. BUt, like others have said, the tranny fluid can get expensive and when you are going to be swapping out about 8 quarts of fluid, it adds up in a hurry. Again, there are lots of posts on how to do this properly to ensure you get the fluid level back to where it needs to be.

I know that thermo pretty much just answered your question, but I would just like to back him up and say that you NEED to change your fluids. If you have 100k miles on your xcase then there will more than likely not be fluid in it. Happened to me and scared me s***less. Change it now to save yourself some money down the road.

Ok thank you all. I will change both fluids over winter break. You all have been a big help.

Also, I am planning on doing the option 3 of just lifting the car. Should I do a flush or just a drain and fill?

Do a drain and fill now, run the case for a couple hundred miles then do it again. Essentially you will need to flush it, but to get a complete flush will take driving the car a bit. Throw in a valve on the drain plug and keep it there for the flushing process. Then put back in the plug because you want the magnet in it to take out the metal fragments in the oil so as to reduce wear

I did the transfer case oil change about an hour ago at work. Thank you to thermo for the drain/fill valve. The techs at work thought I was crazy for even messing with it. They thought I should've just left it alone. About a spoon full of fluid came out. I rigged up thermo's valve and used a grease pump to pump in the royal purple gear oil.

Nice one spooky......please remember these guys in the X type section have had their cars for years and went through these procedures many many times, with a great success rate.

Hoping to hear how you get on as you do the rest of the work and possibly a flush / refill as well....hth soon

My dealer had no issue with changing TC oil.
