Default Transfer case oil amount.

Hi all,
2005 3l awd x type.75000 KM. Right hand drive.
As advised by many on this forum I have changed the oil in my Transfer case. I drained as much oil as could by lifting the d/s up on a two post hoist and allowing the oil to drain in to a measuring cup. got about 300ml out. we tried a sucker pump but could not get it to work.

Then raised p/s about 500 mm. The new oil came in a 1 litre squeeze pack which we were able insert into the filler hole and filled the T/F till oil came out of the filler hole. We allowed the oil to stop running out and refitted the sealing plug. going by the amount oil left in the bag we probably put in about 500ml. My question have we overfilled the T/C? and would this be a problem?.

Regards
David Bruce.

Bruce, you are fine. On a fluid change for the transfer case, you should put in 550-600 ml of fluid. At 500 ml, you are right in the ballpark. Worst case, next time, tilt the car a little more to get the extra 50-100 ml of fluid in.

You have not overfilled the transfer case.

If you drain the transfer box through the so-called 'drain plug' with the car on the level, you will be left with 250mls of fluid still in the box. So measure what you drained out, add 250 and that's the total that was in the box to start with.

If you tip the car to drain more, measure that too and take that amount off 250 so you know how much old oil is still in the box and how much you therefore have to add to get the level right.

Last guidance given by Jaguar for the recommended total oil fill was 500mls ( http://www.jagrepair.com/images/Auto...s-09-2009-.pdf Page 145 )

This link explains how I established the 250 figure and how I do 100% oil changes in my X type that might entertain you!

Hi, Thanks for the quick reply. My car will mainly be used for club runs max 150 km so I don't think I will need to do your mod.
Thanks for the reply. David Bruce.
