Default Transmission Problem no 2,3,4,D

2002 X type 2.5L Auto trans with 113K miles. The trans has been acting up lately. It started with an occasional engine would rev up before hard shift. So today the Jag ran normal for about 2 miles, then a hard shift after which I drive another mile and the trans won't engage any gear except 2nd and Gearbox Fault warning on display. So I limp home in 2nd gear and when I get to my driveway I don't have second gear any more so I was able to use Reverse gear to get into my driveway. There were NO codes and NO warning lights on the instrument cluster. I have checked the shifter selector on the trans and there was no play. I also drained 3L from the trans and filled with synthetic fluid using the procedure on this site(I did check the fill level bolt to be sure it was full). After trans fluid drain, I tool it for a test drive and same problem. So I need some advice/suggestions to determine cause and corrective action.
Thanks,
Howard

Did you see this thread? Shift linkage bushing caused car to only shift into Reverse and Neutral, no 2, 3, 4, D

I did see the thread and I checked the bushing before posting. My bushing is good- there is no play.
Thanks for your response. Howard

Well if the bushing is good, then the most likely culprit is cable adjustment also covered in the above posted thread. Least likely but possible is transmission failure.
