Default Transmission question.

Hello all, I'm currently looking to buy an 03 X-Type but I have a quick question. On the test drive, I noticed the "S" button on the automatic transmission didn't work and I was just wondering if this is a sign of major transmission trouble or something minor?

Did you feel the car not shifting at higher rpms?
Or do you mean the light does not work?

Well, I pressed it while driving and nothing happened. Light doesn't turn on either.

S is sport, so your shifting points will be higher, if you're driving and press the button you won't notice a difference.

Standing start, use the same throttle pressure and look when it shifts. Do the same after you press the S and see if it is lower or higher (since if the light is burnt out you won't know whether you are in sport mode or not.)

If nothing changes likely the switch is pooched. But I don't think it has any effect on the transmission, it's electrical.

Actually, if you're driving and you press the button you CAN notice a difference, depending on certain circumstances. Dependent upon throttle application and rpm's, if you press the Sport button the car may downshift - mine does it all the time.

Update - the battery died during the weekend and after charging it and starting the car, the button worked.
