Default Transmission Repair

I took my 2007 Jaguar Xtype to the dealer and they said I need a solenoid for the transmission. Is this a costly repair? Should I look at replacing the transmission? Gears one thru three work fine and so does reverse. Also, fluid level is good. Any suggestions? It's an automatic.

If you know the code that will tell you what solenoid needs to be replaced.

You may may be able to just drain the transmission, take the valve cover of replace the solenoid and be done.

<!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}-->I will allow myself to give advice from personal experience, not always repair in an auto repair shop is the best option, because it often happens that for a simple service we will very much overpay. Therefore, I prefer to repair my car on my own. If you are worried, you can find out more about your transmission here. It often helped me out.

"Better Living Through Chemistry" is appropriate here.

A $20 can of Transmission Medic-type fix-it just might do the trick, and is well worth the try.

Next - personally - I would inspect, clean and de-grease all seven the electrical connectors that connect to the solenoids, per the photo of the valve body as per that excellent page given you by Dell Gailey.

(and don't forget the five solid whacks with the rubber hammer to the valve body while you're under the car. Maybe start there, first)
