Default Transmission/transfercase fluid change

Im looking at changing these fluids. Not sure if its ever been done in 57000miles that is on it. I called Jag dealership they told me it was $230 just to look at it then $45 a quart for 15 quarts to refill. $900 just for transmission alone. Jag dealership also said both units used the same fluid. They also said its a case of if its not broke dont fix it type deal. Going into a sealed trans could make for problems. I called AAMCO they told me for $300 they can do both trans. and transfer case but it is 2 different type fluids. For $400 I can get it with a new trans filter. What do you guys think/recommend?

Ya, I just had my radiator flushed, a new thermostat, brake fluid flushed/refilled, air filter, etc. and when I asked the dealer to change the ATF they basically said the same thing. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Plus, I originally brought it to the dealer because I heard a noise that I thought was a wheel bearing. Turns out it was the transfer case. Dealer replace both it and the front propeller shaft (i.e. drive shaft) under warranty (thank goodness... ;-).

It was while that was being done that I asked them to do the other "service" items. But, bottom line, they really weren't interested in replacing the ATF.

The transmission fluid is transmission fluid, the transfer case is gear oil, the same as the rear dif. 300.00 seems reasonable if you don't want to do it your self. See if they are doing a flush or just drain and refill. 2 different animals entirely. You definately need to flush both.

ATF flush could be pretty difficult. To change the ATF they have to drop the bottom of the transmission, there is no drain hole. So I'm not sure how you would flush if you didn't first drop the pan to drain the ATF, replace the pan and refill with ATF, run it to circulate the new ATF, and then drop the pan and refill again.

Huh, what??? Of course there is a drain. The trouble is it onl;y drains 3-4 liters at a time, so you drain, refill from the top, drain, refill, drain refill etc until the fluid is clean. Another alternative is you fit a tube in the fill hole ( under the rubber plug under the battery) and open the level plug and run the motor with a constant flow of fluid in.

Is there any recommended mileage to flush the tcase and tranny? Also does anyone know if the manual tranny has the same problem of only draining 3-4 quarts at a time?

Going to have my local mechanic change my transmission fluid. Is there anything special about ATF for these cars or would any ATF for a Ford work?

Is there a filter in the transmission that should be changed at the same time? Should I have my mechanic drop the pan and change the filter or just drain/replace the ATF?

My car has ~62K miles (or ~100K k if you swing that way... ;-)

Thanks

You have a JATCO JF506E gearbox. Same as a VW 09A so the fluid should be a match. I have used Castrol Import Multi Vehicle ATF for the VW 09A but I also have C2S12120 so I use that in the Jaguar X-Type.

When I run out of the Jaguar fluid I will probably use the Castrol or VW fluid (G052990A2).
