Just getting familiar with my X - found a red light on the center console near the change holder - below the stick shift - it lights up RED on startup then flickers off - looked in the manual - couldn't find what it was - any ideas ?

Part of the pre ignition security check. It's also your blinking security light when you lock the car.

PATS(passive anti theft system) light, its a theft deterrant as RacerX pointed out, and a check engine light for the security system

 

is that really a change holder???

Thats where the stability control switch is located if the car is equipt with it
