gearbox
Hey all,
last nitei got the munchies so i went to taco bell drive thru. The lady infrnt of me took forever so i tought id put her in park and wait. I put her in Neutral and the rear jumpt up ive noticed this since ive had her ( about 2 n half months now) and then i put it in park. So finally my turn came and i put her in drive and i noticed a bing bing and then the yellow light on my dash on and a message reading out " gearbox fualt". I broke into a sweet and got nervous. i lost my appitite seeing that my baby was in pain (LOL). i then put her in park and shut her off. I then started her up agian and the sign came on. i went home and parked her in my garage all tense and sorta pissed going inside to calm down and do sumresearch. This moring when i started her up getting ready to go to school i noticed that the message and the light are gone and i didnt feel anything funny in the accelration or gear changes, it was the same as before and hadnt changed after the message had come up. Now my question is culd have this been a glitch or was it cuz of the nuetral thing? does ur x type jump up in the rear wen put in to Neutral? Plz give me ur opinon.

Seriously..I wasn't making fun..I know you must be concerned..
I can picture what you're describing..Mine has never done that..sounds like a lot of torque is being applied to the rear wheels and the brakes make it crawl up over center so to speak..so something in the tranny was engaged to apply power at idle..a sticking clutch pack or something like that..I donno[&:]...The light/warning was maybe a high temp issue because of the locked up tranny.

RE: gearbox
well, mine is a 5-spd manual, not the auto, so no comparison there.
However: with a 'clunk' associated with it, I'd have to wonder if you have a drive-shaft problem (or torque-tube, as they're sometimes referred to). There are viscous couplings in a couple of places on the drive-shaft as it travels from the T-case to the rear diff. If you have one on its' way out.... you 'could' experience the clunk, and possibly even a rise from the rear, as the coupling over-extends ...... i dunno... as I type, that almost sounds backwards.
dood.... i don't know. [X(]
drive it til the wheels fall of... get another. that's what my kids would do. [:@]

RE: gearbox
mine does the same thing with the lift in the rear when i go to put it in neutral at the drive thru. never heard the clunk though, i don't think and haven't got the light. mines an 04 3.0.i figured that it was just the shift in power when it does that. my dodge pik'em up will drop a little, like most of my other vehicles. this is the first i have noticed going up though.

i had a car that did this once. it turned out i had a broke spring and this would cause the car to lift and drop when shifting from D to R to N. try standing back about 10-15 feet and look at the rear wheels of the car... does one of the tires look like it is slanted in? how about the front?

Listen, listen very closely.........BAM....cause that's what you're going to hear when you least expect it. []
Your tranny is in a slow death mode. I would do the following: 1. Stock pile some cash to have it ready for the replacement of said part. 2. Have beer on hand while car is in shop. 3: have a defibrillator ready for yourself (cause once they tell you how much to repair you'll need it)
4: Have beer on hand.....(can't have too much) 5: i know there is a 5....just can't think of it.........5....more beer...
ok, seriously, you're tranny is goona blow anyday now. I hope i'm wrong and i hope you have many years a forward movement in the jag....but the signs are there and the only thing you can do is wait, drink a beer and wait for it to go BOOM!
Sorry, i'm a doctor and my job is to tell it like it is........

Racerx, that is too funny. I am always driving around my 2002 jag andalways have that thought in my mind that my transmission may fail anytime, even though it was replaced by the dealer in 2005! My feeling is my transmission fails on me at this point, I will most likely junk my car.
Jessy, I don't mean to laugh at your misfortune, I just hope its not the transmission, I think we all go through worrying about it!
Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought the transmission issue was resolved in the 2004 and later models?

RE: gearbox
Yes, it was resolved, but the tranny is still weak IMO. They fixed it by installing heavier clutch pack.....in 2005, they went with a new internal design to strengthen the guts of the tranny.... for the most part trannies built in 2005's on up are stronger and should last upward 100k miles.
My suggestion is, if the pocket book allows this, is that if you're in a 2001-2004 x type and your tranny goes, get one from a 2005-2006 installed.
Cost should be about the same....i think...and they bolt right up!
