Default USA - cost of key?

What have folks in the USA been paying for keys?

I am thinking of getting the Tibbe key adapter for a key cutting machine that I have -- nobody within 100 miles or more can cut these keys. It has been suggested that if I get the adapter, there will be folks wanting me to cut keys for them.

So, the question is what you've paid for extra keys, so I'll know if it's worth messing around with this. I may even do mail order (it's easy to decode the cuts, so I don't need you to send a key).

Just the key usually around $40. Key and transponder programming between $120-$170. Dealer from $350-$600 for both. One and only key lost at dealer around $1,000 for key and programming.

Here's a 2 pack fob buy that's very reasonable ($40). Must have key cut and transponder programmed =

You're seeing $40 for a single key? Is it a transponder key? Is shipping included?

The adapter is $300, so I want to get as much of an idea what the market would be before I spend the money.

If I do this, I will be able to make keys with just a good photo of the existing key. I will also be able to supply key with ready-to-program fob.

If there's enough demand, I may also be able to get a programmer, though that's more $$$.

Thus, to do this right, I would need the Tibbe adapter ($300), programmer (LOT$), vice to drive/set fob pins ($20), and a stock of keys, fobs, etc., but I would be able to beat verified prices.

Yeah, $40 to cut a single tibbe key, no programming.

The OEM top portion replacement key (uncut) is not very expensive either =

So, that $40 is:
1) Key blank (ring type or fob type?) (with transponder?)
2) Cutting key to code
3) Shipping

I think I'm going to set up to do this. I figure that enough Jag owners would rather have their key done by a fellow Jag owner.

They charge $40 just to cut it?

I didn't know that Fleabay had someone doing the cuts, but it looks like they get $35 to cut the blank you send, another $8 to ship it back. Blanks without chip run $12, with chip about $33, and one guy sells two new keys, cut with chips, for $74, all ready to program.

I can DEFINITELY beat that, for people here or on the other site, and possibly with Ilco-grade supplies!

Better than that for multiple keys in one order.

I will also be able to supply new fobs, ready to program and with keys mounted, as well as debossed key tags (dog tags) of varying style.

If enough people here show interest, I'll see about getting the adapter and brand new cutting wheel, then hang out my shingle.

My local dealerships in Houston charge 25.00 dollars to cut tibbe keys. I just had one cut yesterday for my 95 XJS.

You're lucky. The dealerships around here don't do them at any price.

Sone, let us know if you get set up. I'll sign up for a key.

My X-Type only came with one key and with only the unlock button working on the FOB. All the buttons were so worn I didn't know which button did what until I looked at the pictures on line. Not knowing what I was doing I bought a blank on eBay. The FOB did nothing after the programming sequence so I went back and read the fine print and realized I bought a European or maybe Asian key, it has a different frequency. It wasn't much money so I used it as a replacement for the button pad, at least now I can see what the buttons were supposed to do before they stopped working. I took the blank tibbe key to 2 local locksmiths who both said they could not cut these keys even though one advertises they specialize in odd car keys. Then I went online and found some locksmiths that advertise they do tibbe keys. I called 3 of them and they all said they would not cut keys that were mailed to them, they thought I was a car thief. The dealer said they would not touch any blank key I brought in, I had to buy the key and the programming from Jaguar for $600 plus a minumum 1/2 hour of labor to diagnose why only the unlock button works.

dh53, you got ripped off.

There's no difference between a key that is mailed and one that is brought in to a locksmith -- the job is duplication.

I plan to get the Tibbe adapter in the middle of July (next paycheck) and I'm checking for a good source for blanks. At least for the time being, I won't have a programmer, so will be sending "raw" transponders.

hey mate, if you have a clone fob check out my thread on how to change the frequency from 433MHz to 315MHz.

Planning to order it this Thursday, and some blanks and fobs. I will report it here when I'm ready to rock and roll.
