Very advanced X-Type transmission (Jatco) QUESTION...
I dug my way all the way thru to the transmission:
That's the Jatco JF506e (from 2.5L 2004 X-Type).
I am currently polishing the outside of the tranny and to do so I turned the tranny in a way so that the front facia, which you see here, was the bottom, the underside.
I already drained the ATF, but when I turned it over, the remaining ATF came running out of the "double-shaft" in the red circle - I think mainly out of the hollow bit in the centre.
Question: Would that be normal? Or are there anywhere seals, which want to be replaced? I cannot spot any seals, which would be accessible without taking the tranny apart (which I do not have planned)... And especially in the centre: I don't think there are seals at all.
Thanks Dell, but I am still unclear, if the ATF is supposed to flow out of there when disassembled. I'll just continue under the assumption, that this is normal....
Think back to the transfer box and the seal arrangement that is notorious for being inadvertently damaged as the uninformed mindlessly remove the link shaft with its snap ring. There are two seals fitted back-to-back - one to keep the transfer box oil out of the main gearbox and the other to keep the main gearbox oil out of the transfer box. Note there are also two larger seals also back-to-back to perform the same duty between the sun gear and the planet carrier.
So I think its safe to assume that all this is because fluid is expected to flow out of the gearbox as you've found.
Thanks, Astro, that was the line of thinking I was leaning towards myself...
Update on my "little project": tranny polished and sprayed with high heat clear coat (just like the TC),
rear crank shaft seal swapped, just like: torque converter oil seal & O-ring, left & right half-axle seals.
