What is needed to change keys and locks?
Greetings to all;
I would first like to say thank you for all of the welcome emails and greetings, being in my late 70s now I have seen many turns in ranges of hospitality and friendship trends over the years and I am simply overwhelmed at the friendliness of all who welcomed me... Thank You! Really makes me wish I had joined sooner instead of just being a visitor user. That said, I now have my first question as a member, as was noted in my introduction, I have a 2005 X-Type wagon and I just had another one totaled and am parting it out taking what I need to make mine as nice as possible and one of the most important things I need to do is change the keys as I lost one of my sets years ago and never replaced it due to the costs involved and the dealership needing to reprogram everything. So the totaled car has all of the keys and and remote transmitters and I would like to change them over to my first car so I can have a full set of keys. I know I have to change the locks and the ignition tumbler as well as the transponder at the ignition key what else is needed to change everything over so that the key transmitters work to lock and unlock the car remotely? is there a separate module for that like in my Lincoln SUV or is it an integral part of another module such as the ecm and if so can the original unit be reprogrammed to recognize the new key transmitters? I am aware that if I would lose all of my keys, replacement fobs are available and can be programmed but again I have no information on how to do that in any of my service manuals or the electrical guide it just state that it is too involved to do without dealer equipment and a full set of lengthy instructions. Any suggestions? At my age I do not need the aggravation of having just one key and the possibility of losing it and being stranded. Any help anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated. Sorry if this is too long I wanted to be certain that I included everything for clarity.
Kind regards,
George

Without wanting to sound daft:
The answer to "What is needed to change keys and locks?" is: New keys and locks... - an a whole lot of time.
While I have not done that yet - but I replaced one of the door-lock mechanisms - it seems logically to me that removing all those door lock mechanisms, which can be opened via a key (driver's door and probably rear hatch) would require replacement, and that is quite a bit of work. Plus of course the ignition lock, and this may have an additional level of difficulty, as this probably would also affect the security module, and you may run into unforeseen problems there.
THUS:
If I understand correctly, your only issue with your current X-Type is that you have only one key? If that is correct, just buy a second key as blank key from a cheap online platform like ebay or aliexpress. Make sure that you buy a complete key, and not just the shell. Those keys work both on 315MHz and 433MHz. Mine is 433MHz in Australia. You are in the US (I thought, the wagon is not available in the US - but I may be wrong there), so I think your remote would be on 315MHz. There is a simple button combination you have to press on those keys to swap from 433 to 315 and back. Then have your Tibbe key cut somewhere locally and have the transponder-pill cloned. You can do the programming of the remote yourself.

George, I am on the side of Peter above. You have the VIN to the car with the one key. Call up a local locksmith and ask them if they have the ability to program from fresh a Jaguar key. In short, what the locksmith is going to have to do is look up your VIN and from there, he can get the cutting sequence for the new Tibbe key. Then he will need a special bit of software (this is what most locksmiths are not going to have). The good locksmiths will then be able to tap into the car under the dash and tell the car to accept the new key that you have. Once they put the new number into the car, the new key will be as good as the factory one. Yes, this entire thing is going ot run you around $300. Not the cheapest thing. But, when you start looking at the hours that would be spent converting over all the locks, the steering column tumbler, then converting over the ECU and instrument cluster, that will be $300 well spent.
George, I have to ask again for clarification: Do you still have ONE key for your car or none? If so, you can actually see the TIBBE sequence when looking at the key, and you don't even need the VIN no for that. If you do not know, what I mean by them, I can search the info you need to be able to see your code on your key.
A blank key from a cheap online seller may be as cheap as $20. The cost of cutting and for the cloning of the transponder depends on your locksmith.
If your local locksmith is too greedy and if you are brave enough to mail your only transponder chip in the mail to a locksmith with a fair price, you can save money there - that's what I am doing soon. And I will mail (as many times before) my blank to that far away locksmith and I will send him the code via email plus pictures of the key, so that he can confirm my "reading" of the code.

One customer in a remote area sent me a $500 deposit to have me ship him a chip reader/writer and several clone chips, plus keys cut from his photos. When it all got there, I walked him through the process of reading his one working key and cloning the chips, then he sent back the equipment after confirming that the new keys and chips worked.
Thank you to all for your responses, I had felling I was going to get the answers I did receive and for that I am very grateful. I was basing my inquiry about changing everything due to bogus information from our local Jaguar dealer and the costs quoted but I knew I would get accurate information here and that is why I posed my inquiry. I am going to order a blank and go from there as suggested and hopefully, I will be able to clone the transmitters from the wrecked car. The service and electrical manuals I have give absolutely no information on how to program the transmitters, does anyone have a link or a copy of the instructions to do this task? When I added an extra key and transmitter to my Lincoln all of the information was in the owners manual but I have not been able to find anything for this car. Thank you again everyone,
George

Before you buy a blank key, make sure you have a locksmith who will cut it for you -- many won't.
Asking a locksmith to cut a key that you buy somewhere else is like taking your own raw bacon and eggs to your local cafe and asking them to cook them for you.
