Default Transfer case

I just bought a 2004 jaguar x-type with what I'm told has a bad transfer case...I'm probably going to drop the transfer case myself, but does anyone know if these are rebuildable, can I get a rebuild kit. Is it a real pain to get it out....I work on cars all the time but we all know what a real pain working on European car can be.

Early 2004 equals viscous
Late 2004 equals mechanical.

First thing is find out which you have.

It is 20% Ford if that will quell the European fear.

Ok, the car was built 10/03. So it's an early 2004

When you put the car in gear It was making a bunch of noise and wasn't moving the car. I would like to rebuild it. Where could I get parts?

"Making a bunch of noise" sounds more like replace than repair. I looked some up on www.car-part.com. You're looking at a K-buck +/- for a used one.

Good morning Eddy,
If you will read my introduction and following posts, I may be able to help you, I hope I am not breaking any rules here, also being a newbie, you will find that I just began parting out a 2006 Estate with only 72,000 miles on it and I have everything you need and quite a bit more, engine, transmission final drive etc and even rust free Florida body aprts. I would love to find a home for these and other items and I am in Akron, Ohio not that far from Illinois. Like I stated I am new here as well so I am not certain what the rules and regs are for exchanging information to get these items to you but I am sure that someone with more knowledge will advise us. If this sounds like a path you would like to explore please reply to this post and hopefully we can make a connection, but again I would like to stress, I do not wish to overstep any rule and regulation about direct communications or sales. Please, if anybody can illuminate me as to proper protocol of one Jag lover trying to help another please reply,
Thank you and kind regards,
George

First up: My experience comes from a 2004 X-Type, which is probably a later one, hence, I do not know, where the difference to your early 2004 is...

>> When you put the car in gear It was making a bunch of noise and wasn't moving the car.
And how do you know that the issue is (only) the TC (transfer case), and not the tranny (transmission)?

Removing the TC from the car is already one of the most difficult things you can do on an X-Type, mainly due to the upper left bolt of the catalyst bracket, which is nearly impossible to remove. There is another threat, where this was discussed, where I contributed as well, and where you may get an idea of the issue and how to attack the problem.
But that is not the only bolt, which is hard to remove when trying to remove the TC - there are lots of ridiculously positioned bolts. So here is that a.m. threat to get the first idea about the difficulty:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-287142/page2/

And yes: Someone has opened the TC already and replaced the inside seal.
However, when I tried to merely open the TC, I failed. I cannot explain, why my TC would not open up after removing all bolts...

Plus, is the fault you are describing is due to the TC and not the tranny, I can't see, where you would find replacement for the worn interior parts, i.e. replacement with another TC would be the only way...
