What oil?

What oil?
May seem a daft question, but can anyone tell me whether its a better option to put long life fully synthetic oil into my 2.0d xtype as aposed to standard fully synthetic oil? A mechanic i have just spoken to says its a better option as the long life oil contains more detergents and i cover about 30k a year. Thanks guys

Mark,
(I've also moved this question from UK Region section to X-Type section. Please post further tech questions in the X-Type section.)
I'll not be drawn into the 'best oil' debate but will remind you that Jaguar Service intervals are on a Time or Mileage basis - whichever comes first.
On 30K miles a year, you'll be servicing on a Time interval.

Awww, c'mon Graham give it a try- it's FUN! Sometimes the pancake bunny gets to come out and earn his keep too.
Mark-
There's no universal agreement that synthetics of any type are the way to go on your car. Your mechanic was probably expressing his own thoughts but like many has no first handed experience to back up his claim. Given that these engines usually outlive the rest of the car even when fed the cheapest of the off brand oils, it's hard to say that anything else is 'better'.
In any case, if you're going to change the oil in accordance with Jaguar's schedule, there no advantage to using any synthetic.

Oil
Many thanks for that, much appreciated. Am i right in thinking then that its perfectly ok to use long life oil? A warehouse where i visit stocks Q8 long life for £18 for a four litre container. Used it in my tdci mondeo for about 60k with no issues and as far as im aware its the same engine as the x-type or am i wrong?

markoscar, I will recommend a site for you. take a look at - Bob is the Oil Guy. This guy is as independent as you can get. He does oil analysis as a hobby. he is not sponsored by anyone, so, he has no reason to say Brand A is better than Brand X. He calls it as he sees it. Do some reading and I think it will open your eyes to a few things.
As for your question, if after reading the site I mentioned you are still not sure, then buy what makes you feel the best. LIke was stated, with the tight tolerances of current engines and the quality of oils that are made these days, you are not going to see much difference in the long run.
