Default What's right and what's left?

Hi Guys,

This may sound like a stupid question but, considering the motor is mounted sideways what side if the motor is the left side and what side of the motor is the right? Changing valve cover gaskets and there is a L and R gasket.

Also, Which cylinder is cylinder 4? I've seen an engine diagram here before but can't seem to find it again.

Thanks,
Joe

left side bank is the one under air filter housing so right bank is the bank under inlet manifold, and i think number 4 cylinder is in left bank either front cylinder or middle cylinder

Joe, easy way to remember it. Go and stand by the passenger front tire (since you are in the US). You are now standing at the "front" of the engine (where all the timing chains and assessories are). If you stick out your left hand, it will go over the "left side" of the engine. If you stick out your right hand, it will go over the right side of the engine. Or, the left side is against the firewall (this is also known as Bank 1 in some applications) and the side nearest the radiator is the right side (known as Bank 2 for some applications).

As for cylinder #4, the left side has the odd numbered cylinders, with #1 being nearest you. The right side has the even number cylinders, with #2 being nearest you. So, that would put #4 cylinder on the side of the engine nearest the radiator, the middle cylinder.
