It's not a great idea to keep running your tank that low unless you like to change fuel filters in your spare time.

20 bucks of premium isn't gonna get you that far, and where do you get 8 gallons of $3 per gallon gas for $20? I'd love to know.

Slow, stop and go traffic, as you may encounter during a snowstorm, will decrease miles per gallon, yes.

Perhaps to gather more data you might take some notes on the exact amount of fuel you put in the car and the mileage and hand calculate if you do not want to rely on the vehicle readout.

i mean if you pay gallon of gas for $3, and put 20$ you get about 6.5 to 7 gallon right? I reset trip B when i put the gas and it lasted about less then 100miles when i put 20$..

the best way to get an accurate reading is to fill the tank each time and calculate the results. These cars are not econoboxes by any stretch. A car with AWD is dragging around the AWD mechanism even if it is not being utilized. There are several threads on this forum regarding mpg, you can check them out. You can also go to fuelly.com and look at other Jags. I track my fuel consumption religiously and have a listing on fuelly.com. Overall I average 21.5 which is a drop of 10 mpg from my previous ride. Right now my Jaaaaag Wagon's computer is reading 20.0. I live in Maine temps in the 20's. The mileage drops because of the cold and the gas is reformulated.

i reset Trip B when i put gas every time.. and it say avg fuel 17.0mpg.. i guess its all depend on weather like u say.. would bad oil filter or other stuff might cause this?

lymeboy pretty much nailed it.

Bad oil filter, not really no. Things like tire pressure and properly maintained spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter, those types of things do impact mpg. However the biggest factor is your driving style. 17mpg is not exceptionally low in city driving with a winter fuel mix. I'm around 19mpg right now myself.

hk, due to the variable valve timing, it is really easy to get the mileage down into the single digits. I know right after I fill up my car, if I accelerate even mildly, the fuel mileage will never get above 4 mpg. Get on the gas hard and you can really suck it down. Our cars do not like stop and go traffic. Get them out on the highway and up in the speed and they will purr like you won't believe. I get about 27 mpg on the highway at 75 mph but only about 12 or so in town. I'm not hard on the gas in town. So, seeing what you say about driving in the snow and whatnot, I can see where you can get something like that.

thanks thermo! yeah i think i get like 10-12mpg in town.. i was just make sure there are other problems that might cause this.. i guess i'll get oil change and put new air filter and what not.. hopefully shocks and sway bar links and bushing will be here thursday so i can replace them and get alignment as well

I get 17-19mpg all city driving and not being as easy on it as I can. I just drove 800 miles and consistantly pulled in 25.5mpg going 70-75 with 2 people and a loaded down trunk

I get 14-15 MPG all day long in the city..25-27 on the interstates....These cars are best at cruising altitudes.

(3.0L with K&N air filter)

I do a little bit better in the city....18-20, but I've got a 2.5L manual. That is unless I put my foot in it and then you can do very poorly very quickly as Thermo noted. On the highway, I get around 30ish. The X-Type is happiest whilst cruising at 70-75!

On a full tank my normal range is only about 200 miles. Trip says 16.x mpg consistently with all city driving.

I never run my car with less than half a tank of gas. Simply because the last thing I want to do is have my car get stuck somewhere or not move and be worrying about running out of gas when its 6 degrees outside. You need the gas to keep your car running for heat until help arrives.

One time I did reset the trip computer when I got on the highway. After a 1.25 hr drive up to six flags, it read 35 mpg!

The further u drive the more the trip meter will even out and the more accurate it will get. But if your worried about optimum mileage pick up a nice '98+ tdi volkswagen and call it a day

I'm satisfied with around 20mpg in this car. As hard as I drive it, and as hilly as it is around here, I'm just fine with that. Considering my Range Rover is lucky to pull 12mpg, I find the X to be quite thrifty.

I'm happy with 16. In summer I pull only about 12-13.

I think that is urban legend stuff.
I drive my car till the light comes on every tank, then fill it full.
I am at 230000km and original fuel filter. I dont see any need to change it, until it wont pass enough fuel through it. maybe when the car hits 10 years old I will do it.

Maybe I am just lucky or maybe we have clean fuel here? I have done this for 20 years of driving and only had one filter cause me issues. To be fair, it did cause me to have to get towed from the side of the hightway, but no ill effect on the car.

I put a small bag with extra winter clothes in the car in case of a break down in the cold. No need to run the engine to stay warm.
