Welcome to the forums Nex,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to X-Type forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

Please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some information about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

If you had only described the lack of engine power and rough running, I'd have thought this was a diesel specific issue. However also losing power to electrical accessories suggests this may not be the case. We've had several reports on the forum of the multi strand battery cables breaking up at the terminals causing intermittent starting and running difficulties. Check the cables for integrity and tightness at the connection terminals circled in red:

Another check with any poor running is to have the error codes read. A basic code reader will be sufficient to read powertrain codes. If there are stored or pending codes, post them back here for a decode.

)Hi thanks for getting back to me, just had RAC look at my car they couldn’t fix it or really tell me what the problem is but he took photos of some codes. I have no idea what I’m looking at.

U1900 CAN Communication bus fault
B1318 Battery voltage low
Body Control Module - Codes 2
Instrument Pack. Codes 7
PO0571 Cruise Brake Switch Malfunction
P1544
P1000
U1039
Engine Codes: 8
P0500
P1637
P1699
P0622

Hope this info is correct, the guy didn’t make me feel confident, got the feeling I was being fobbed off.

X type? You sure you're in the correct forum? This is for X Type (X400). What does the 1996 in heading mean?

P0500 code is a vehicle speed sensor problem. It could be either just the sensor or the module itself. I would recommend replacing the sensor first since it's cheaper.

P1544 Engine coolant heater B control circuit

U1039 is a CAN BUS communication fault

P1637 - which indicates CAN issue between ECM and ABSCM

P1000 - which indicates the status tests are not complete (hence ignore this DTC)

P1699 is a CAN Bus failure. This could be intermittent, a one off (confused data stream), or literally a hard failure such as the A/CCM or ECM., or a physical cable/connector failure somewhere along the path. The CAN network basically gets "rebooted or hard reset" every time the ignition is turned to the "0" position.

P0622 means that the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a malfunction with the generator field coil control circuit.
So... First begin with load testing the battery. This needs to be done in or out of car with this type unit =

If the battery is fine, you then need to check the wiring for chaffing, breaks. Check the glow plug relay. Have you noticed lately that this stays lit far in excess of the normal approximately 8 seconds?
