x type 430 code is haunting me

Default x type 430 code is haunting me

Hello gentlemen, I have a 2002 X type 2.5 auto trans with 85k. After a check engine light came on I found 171 174 and 430 codes present. It also began to stumble at low rpms when you slowly increased engine speed but hadn't down shifted yet(auto). I found collapsed pcv hose, leaking IMT o rings, original spark plugs. I changed IMT o rings, MAFS, spark plugs, pcv hose and valve, intake gaskets, checked for more vacuum leaks. 430 code still shows up after 50 miles and the low rpm stumble is getting worse. Will bad o2 sensor cause the stumble or is there another issue causing both code and stumble. I am tired of guessing. I thought I had it beat when I found all the bad parts. Thanks for your help.

Hello, anybody out there? Still hoping someone can answer my question about O2 sensors and the stumble.

I am having a P0430 appearing as well. Resetting the DTCs would give me a week or two before it returned. I was not getting any other codes but decided to replace all four O2 sensors myself. Curiously, after replacing them, the P0430 code shows up within 20 or 30 miles of driving.


....yep, time for a new catalytic converter. Luckily P0430 means the front one, which is relatively easy to change. I'm not looking forward to the inevitable P0420...

At 148,000 miles, I am not one for cheating by using a spark plug spacer on the oxygen sensors, either.

thanks, for the help I am not above the spacers. I guess this problem was a little too much for the forum.

I think you've got a few options, first start with new 02 sensors they are a wear item and do go bad when the mileage gets up there.

After you're sure that both 02 sensors and wiring on the front cat are definitely good, if the problem is still there than it's either time for a new cat, (used direct fit one's are around $110-$160 on E-bay) or you can try and run a can of Cataclean through your tank and see if it clears up the check engine light as that stuff actually works for cats that aren't too damaged.

One odd thing is the cat on the front radiator side is actually called the rear cat bank 2 in the parts books so make sure to order the right one.

Thanks for the help I will let you know how it unfolds. I did the upstream sensor yesterday and cleared the code, the low rpm stumble seems to be clearing up as I use injector cleaner and run high test. So maybe I have multiple issues going on.

Is that for the official parts? What about aftermarket cats like these:

All 2002 JAGUAR X TYPE 6 Cylinder Catalytic Converters

"F" seems to designate front, and "R" rear.

That site seems to be correct in their description while many on e-bay and Rockauto are 180 out.

Since a bunch of sites seem to flip flop on what they are calling them, best bet is to trust the picture.

If the inlet connector that bolts to the exhaust manifold comes straight out of the top of the cat than it's the one that goes closest to the bumper/radiator.

If the inlet connector is offset at a 90 degree angle than it's the one that goes closest to the firewall.

Don't think that site has very good prices though, they seem to be pretty expensive compared to many other places.

Thank you sir! That said, I still don't even trust the pics on these shoddy sites.

I actually tried to order a CA-compliant one from Discount Cat Converters for $481, but the order was canceled and they said they could not get the part.

Oh, Jag ownership....

87 miles and no check engine light! I have to hit 100 miles before they will give me an inspection sticker.

Hey Essex,

I saw your post and have code 430 on my x-type and changed all the parts you said in your original post" haunting me."What finally turned off your light and did it finally pass inspection? Also would you try cataclean if you were me?

Yes I would use it, I put a can in a month ago after having misfires and getting that code or may have been 0420 -other bank: and code hasnt come back yet.

It does not hurt to run the car hard either to clean things out.
My wife drives like an old lady, so every other month(appx) I have to get in the car and hold it to the floor up to 100mph to clear the cel and remove the low accel stutter.
