X-TYpe Boot Won't Open
Very early 2001 x-type (UK spec). Boot won't open, though perversely the warning light "boot open" is on permanently preventing the car from being locked remotely using the key fob. I can lock and open all four doors using the key manually. .
I have read several different recommendations (and some horror stories) - but what is the best solution for this early car ?
Remove the rear seats?
Try drilling a hole behind the number plate ? (can't find details, just references to this method?)
Smashing the left hand light cluster?
Any other suggestions?
Anybody got a link to pictures and/or video of rear seat removal?
Thanks in advance

When I attended NP02 at Jaguar Training we asked the same question and the answer was "break out the left rear tail lamp assy and reach into the boot".
A year or two later an X400 came into the shop with this problem. Everyone crowded around while I destroyed the left tail lamp and opened the boot lid from the inside.
Luckily the car was in new car warranty so I ordered a new rear light assy and repaired the boot lid latch.
The least expensive and least damaging way into the boot is likely the left tail lamp.
good luck.

This link will give you all the answers you need both to taking pre-emptive action to prevent the problem arising and what to do if you get into Hawthorn's unfortunate position. Post # 4 has two more links that give more photos and measurements for the place to drill the trunk lid

Thanks everybody . very useful
One more question --
Given that the warning light "Boot Open" is on permanently, does that imply an electrical fault rather than a mechanical one?. i.e. does the central locking system "think" that the boot is already open and therefore doesn't actuate the lock mechansim.
Thanks again for your help

If I disconnect the battery on my estate, the tailgate will not open via the fob or by the button on the tailgate when the battery is reconnected.
I find that if I lock the car manually with the key, then use the fob to open it up, all is good again........strange old car.......
