Default X type cooling fan stays on

2002 Jag X type, 2.5L, 112k miles. I have read numerous posts on this topic and all the posts I have read state the fans stay on and you need to disconnect the battery or pull a 40 amp fuse to stop the fan. The other posts are the fans do not come on at all. So my situation is slightly different in that the fans will stay on after the car is turned off, but if I start the car again within a few seconds still keeping it in "Park" and then turn the car off the fans stop running. It occurred on a day when the ambient temp was 75F, the temp gage was showing normal and the coolant was at the full mark.
Do you think that the problem is the infamous Fan Control Module or are there other reasons for this to occur?
Thanks
hak

Although mine have never run for any amount of time at shut down, I have read scarce posts that their car runs for a short time after driving then shutting off. On many other cars this is common when the various sensors read the car is overheated by a certain margin above "safe mode".

When my FCM failed I noticed the fans running after shut down in a Wal-Mart parking lot to go shopping. Noticed it and thought "weird" never done that before. Unfortunately upon returning 20 minutes later they were still running. My FCM had failed. Heed that ("normal" = right at midpoint or very slightly below the mid mark on guage) is a relative reading. The Guage actually shows that reading within a fairly large temperature range. Usually between 185° and 205°F. Can go about 212°F on a uphill hard pull although mine has never gone above 206°.

The other possibility is MAYBE, one side of the FCM has failed and only one fan is turning. You can check this by the guru approved member "Thermo" test. Get car to operating temperature. Turn on air conditioning and set the temperature to the maximum coldest temperature. Now open hood (bonnet) and lean slightly into the engine area with face slightly above the radiator. You should get a face fill of air movement from the fans. This is a "hack" that tells the sensors (and FCM) to turn the separately speed controlled fans to turn on full blast. It's hard but you can shine light to look at both fans but I have old eyes now and not the best for me lol!

Here's another Thermo post on the "poor mans" coolant temperature test (no ELM obd reader).

We had a LOT of trouble with the fan control modules on the early cars.
TSBs for you.

I have a 2002 Jaguar X-Type V6. It has 97,000 miles and the fan recently wouldn't stop running. My mechanic thinks it's the fan control module. He installed the new module and the fans stopped running. They tested it and now the fans aren't coming on. They used an oscilloscope to check the PWM signal, and they believe they got a bad module. They ordered a new one, which will arrive today. If that one doesn't work, he thinks then the ECU could be sending a bad PWM signal to the fans.

I've read somewhere that the fan control module replacement is very specific on what works and what wouldn't. The cheap knock offs would only have 3 input receptors, etc. What model should I look for? I found a Gates FCM134 on eBay. Is that the OEM?

Gates FCM 134K not another brand that says it meets spec, but actually manufactured by Gates (the original provider).

This is what I ordered - Gates FCM134 (without the “K” - does that matter?): https://www.jegs.com/i/Gates/465/FCM134/10002/-1

My mechanic previously tried 2 non-Gates brand with 4 pins, but the fans would not turn on when tested. Should I gamble and go for the Gates FCM134? If I open the package, I don’t think I can get a refund.

So... Gates makes both a FCM 134 and a FCM 134K. Every reputable site I know for sure carries the correct module, lists it as the 134K. Idk if the one without the K is correct. The only way to ensure that would be call Gates and get their assurance.

there is a post with lots of information on these modules, Dell posted some really good information there, look for it.
As for me, my FCM was out after a car wash so got my trustedarduino and wrote a couple lines of code, programmed fans to run at given temp, forked the wire for signal from temp sensor, ran 12 volt - 40amp relay for each fan powered from a 5 volt low amp relays, and was running for a while with no troubles, but the wiring looked really bad, and when relays started acting up, I decided to move them away from the heat into the cabin, and have not yet pulled the wires to do so.
meanwhile fans are running full speed all the time, until i get around to housing the relays in the cabin.
my setup is to listen for voltage on the sensor, the way it works the hotter it gets the higher the voltage ( up to 1 VOLTs) so i have arduino sense the voltage and not run fans if temp is < 85 C, run one between 85 and 95, and run both >95C OR when AC is on. had to do some testing at different temps until i got the final setting that suited me. The good part about arduino is that when u turn the car on, they both spin for a second then stop, as part of it's self test, i like it.
