Default X-Type, "cruise not available" limp home

I've had my 03 X-Type 3.0, automatic for a little over a year, 25,000 miles with no problems, total 171,000 on the car. Great car...
Last week the a.c. compressor bearing seized up, snapping the serpentine belt. I replaced the belt with a shorter one, bypassing the a.c. pulley until I can replace the ac. Car ran fine. I also replaced the rear tires and changed the oil, then drove the car about 15 min to a NH state inspection station. Everything passed, including the obd2 check. From there I drove about 50 miles on the highway and suddenly the car lost power and I pulled over to the breakdown lane. The car was still running but wouldn't go over about 10 mph. I managed to get off the highway and into a parking lot. It won't rev above 2500, and won't shift above first gear, even shifting it manually. Reverse does work. The dash displays "cruise not available" and the check engine light is on but my cheap tester says no codes stored. It also has to crank about twice as long as usual before starting. I am currently out of state and can't get back to the car until Monday but I'm hoping that someone else may have had the same problem and knows what's wrong.
I have read all the entries about "cruise not available", but none of them have all these symptoms. I will start by checking the vacuum hoses, rear abs, and battery voltage as suggested in those posts. Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Silly question... Did you reset the car? Turn it off, count to 30 and start it again? Mine did the same on the freeway. I pulled over and reset it and it worked fine. Turned out to be a bad throttle thingy. Never changed it out, just can't use cruise control any more.

Yes, shut it off for about half an hour, started it and drove about 100 ft, problem still there.
I guess it's not really limp home mode, as it won't go into any gears except first and reverse, therefore won't go over about 10 mph.
