X Type key code
I have just bought a UK 2002 X Type 3ltr which was supplied with 1 key.
I want to purchase another key and have read mainy post on this site and others about how to program the key fobs. However when I rang a key supplier to order a fob I was told that although I can program the keys the immobiliser will also need reprograming to the same code which can only be done by an auto locksmith. Without doing this the keys will open the doors and turn on the ignition but the car will not start. I have not been able to find any reference to this anywhere so is he correct?

Thanks for the replies but I am still confused. The key I am not worried about as I have the measuring equipement and machinery to cut a new key to match the original. Programing the fobs to the car is not a problem. What I don't understand is why or how the immobiliser is effected.
I've just had a thought. Please be stick with me as I am unfamiliar with this sort of lock.
In the case of a lock such as a yale the key is cut to suit the barrel. With the car lock is the barrel programed to suit the key hence effecting the immobiliser? If this the case I am not changing the key code but just adding an extra fob thereby not effecting the immobiliser. Is this correct?

Sorry guys you must be getting fed up with me. It's an age thing or at least that's my excuse. I think one last question should do it then I will leave you alone. What is the difference between what Timpson's do and what happens when programed in the car (ignition on/ off 4 times etc) Thank you for your patience (which must be wearing thin)

Let me try to help you understand the situation.
You can have a basic ordinary "Tibbe" key that is cut to fit your door lock and also the ignition lock.
It needs to be cut to the T code. See the web for instructions how to read the T code. The T code will be in the form T653241 where the numbers signify each of the cuts on the shaft.
It is useful to have the T code so that you can get a key cut almost anywhere in the UK. Why ? With you car locked, open the boot, leave your key in the boot and close it ....then what?
You stand a much better chance of getting a basic key especially when miles from home /on holiday if you have the T code.
The next aspect is you need the correct chip in the key.
This needs to be recognised by the car if you want to start the engine.
There are instructions on how to code a key but in normal circumstances you need TWO working keys.
A main dealer can obviously sort this out but usually at high cost.
I understand that some Timpsons and other locksmiths can clone the chip from an existing working key.
I understand the main dealer and self programming of the chip deletes and resets the security.
The requirement for TWO keys is designed to stop easy copying.
The normal Jaguar key comes integral in the familiar four button flip type housing. These are for the remote lock features
The buttons can easily be matched to the car by the instructions readily available. This process only allows the remote lock/unlock features to be done so is less important than allowing the car to be driven.
If buying off Ebay just be aware that fobs for USA use a different frequency to the UK. Most sellers will state if it is a USA version.

Thank you Henry K I've now got it! (I think). The key and fob are two seperate items with their own connection to the cars security. The fob unlocks and disables intruder sensors and the key, with chip, disables the immobiliser. My head was stuck in the 80's when remote alarms started coming in. In those days the key pad unlocked everything including the immobiliser and the key just enabled you to turn the ignition lock and open the boot. The Renault Megane I just got rid of was the same. I can program the most complex modern CNC machinery but the process of opening and starting a car had me stumped! Must be time for me to retire and vegitate.

Last time I had only one key and lost it it cost just over £200 to get my car, not a Jaguar, reprogrammed so this time when my Jag came with one key I went to a Timpsons or equiv. Cloned the key for £70 and got the remote section for £35 and passed them to my wife to keep.. grin.. sorted. :-)
