x type noises?? 02 2.5
I have a 2.5 and noticed with the windows down a sort of revolutionary noise. Sounds almost like cha cha like a train would make i guess. Kinna sounds like an exhaust leak or intake leak. I think it comes on around 2.5 k rpm and is noticeable till about 3.25k then starts to drowned out. It also seems to happend after it warms up a little - if I kick it down a couple times then bring it back down its most noticeable. Listening to it with the hood up it almost sounds like it comes from around the intake. I notice these have a weird intake manifold on them. Is this just a noise they make? I have also heard that they make some drive train noise. Sometimes from the passanger side it seems to make a whine almost like that of a super charger is that normal? Im also getting like 14mpg?? Seems a little low. What do you guys get?

Could be one of two problems and without really hearing it, i'm gonna guess.
1- exhaust leak....(if it was an intake leak, your car would die at idle..and would run like crap at cruising speed). Check your mufflers, exhaust and exhaust manifold. i heard stories that the right side cat tends to crack...makes the same noise.
2- possible timing chain on one of the cams is messed up....
like i said without hearing it...very difficult to diagnose...
have you tried your local garage?

I had them listen to it. They thought it sounded off too, but x types arent all that common around here so they didnt really know much. They said that they would have been more concerned if it was coming from the passenger side of the motor. What side is the timing chain on?

Fuel filter in rear, under car car about 1/4 way past fuel tank. timing chains are on pass side (right side) where the serpentine belt is, behind that cover.

Well im guessing its exhaust related then. I do get a slight exhaust rattle at times kinna before it make the noise in the rpm range. The timing chains would make a consitant noise wouldnt they? Like this happends as it gets hot. If I hold it at 3rpms for a couple mintues it starts up. If it was timing chain related wouldnt it make the noise all the time or not?

Well I had an exhaust place look at it today. Go figure it wouldnt really make the noise. Im thinking it has something to do with it being like 30 degrees here today. Anyway he said he thought it was prolly bearing in the water pump or powersteering pump. Would that make sense?

Yeah, that could be it also....like i said..really hard to make that call without see and hearing. Alternater bearing can also make that sound........just gonna havta wait it out and catch it at the right time
If it was the water pump, it usually starts to leak when making any noise....power steering pump can cause difficultly in steering...(hard to turn the wheel at idle)
I suppose you can put a load on all....try this....start car, turn on all lights (high beams too) air conditioning also, heated seats if you have it and rear defroster...this will put a load on your alternater and A/c compressor....if it's bad you should hear that noise.....
at same time, turn wheel left and right...test your powersteering pump out......any noise?
as for the water pump, check for leaks under car over night....

K Ill try those things. Fairly certain it comes from the left hand side of the car though. I also have to assume the sudden drop in temp has something to do with it not making noise. I got it a couple months ago and its maid the noise like clock work. Now that the temp drops here all a sudden the noise goes away?

RE: x type noises?? 02 2.5
Yeah, that is kind of weird...with a temp drop it should get louder...not quieter lol...
You didn't notice any leaks on the left hand side from car?

Havent noticed leaks of any nature. How does the water pump work - would running the heat have any effect on it? Only thing I can think of would be that running the heater had an effect or maybe the headers arent warming up to the point where they would make the noise now. Engine bay sure is crammed - the header by the fire wall sure puts off alot of heat. I might just forget about it now that Ill be having the window up more - haha - until something breaks or I get annoyed by it again next summer.

Yes, alt is on right side....as for the dimming, it's normal under the heavy load at idling....
Well i suppose next time you hear it, pop the hood open and try to see where it's coming from...

RE: x type noises?? 02 2.5
Well I went and messed with it somemore. This time I tried it without the load and turning the wheel. It did seem to stimulate the sound. It also was making a clunk while turning the wheel to the right a half revo on the way back. I was doing it while holding it at the 3k point. So I went to a friends house and had him hold it while I used a peice of wood to listen to the steering pump and the water pump. It sounded like the water pump was making lots of noise , more so than the steering. However Im just not sure thats what the sound is from. It seems like the sound kinna from from like below the brake resevore or something. Would it be normal for the water pump to sound smooth at idle and real ruff at 3k while listening to it with a peice of wood?
