Default X-Type transmission refill

Jeeze Louise, guys; I hate to seem dense, but could someone please set me straight on the refill capacities for an '02 X-Type auto. The fairly straightforward procedure outlined in the FAQs under the heading "How-to-drain-and-refill......" would seem to indicate that if I remove the plug and drain, then re-fill with 8 qts of ATF, I'm almost there, although posts further down the page indicate that all I'll get out is 3.5 qts of the 8 qt fill.! With synthetic ATF at almost $10.00/qt here, I don't want to overfill my (sister's) tranny by almost 5 qts !

When I pulled the plug, 2.5 qts of black (but not burnt-smelling) fluid came out of her hard-working (and high mileage-238,000 km) trans. so where do I go from here?

I did mine (2004 3.0 w/52K miles) and about the same amount came out.... the remainder is in the tourqe converter and other internals.

Others have covered this in posts on the forum (that where I got my info) .... safest thing to do is add back 3 quarts, drive for a week and repeat....

After doing this three times you should have replaced better than 70% of the fluid.

There are posts that show how to check the level

For me it really smoothed out the shifting after about 500 miles of driving... I can only assume it cleaned out all gunk after running clean fluid.

Used Castrol Import Multi Vehicle ATF

Not an expert by any means; just sharing my experience..... good luck and take care of the transfer case and rear diff as well while you are at it.

Thanks, Inky7, that's just what I've decided to do, after reading all the threads I could find. I guess my question, then, to all the Mod/Admin members would be "Why is a somewhat mis-leading post on re-filling a transmission ar the very top of a FAQ section?" If I were about to try and change my transmission oil, and I visited a thread on the subject, it would serve me to read the whole thread to get all the clarification possible before I started. When I go to FAQs, though, I take it that the first post I come to is pretty much gospel; I mean, it IS at the top of an FAQ and I take that it has been sanctioned by being there.

Just wondering.....

I would pay for an after market dipstick. It seems doable, no?

That would be great, along with a transmission 'sump' where you could drain the whole thing at once>

The JATCO JF506E is used in the VW (AKA 09A) and Land Rover as well as the Jaguar X-Type. The CASTROL IMPORT MULTI-VEHICLE fluid is compatible at around $6.00 per quart.

The filter is a screen in the bottom of the trans so it not accessible.

The torque converters hold several liters of fluid that is not drainable in normal situations.

I don't see how a dipstick could be used in this gearbox??????

The stand pipe in the bottom of the case works fine if you know how to use it.

It seems most late model gearboxes use this same temp/level operation.

Most people these days don't even use the engine oil dipstick!!!!!!!!!!

The Mazda version of the JF506E is the only one with a dipstick. It mounts in place of the rubber plug at the front of the tranny. In our X-Type, the battery box would be in the way of retrofitting it.

The 8 qts. referenced is only if you get the fluid out of the tranny cooler and torque converter and other internals. Involves a complete flush basically.
You should only get 3-3.5qts out if you just pull the tranny drain bolt out.

The transmission oil cooler cannot be flushed as a normal cooler because the thermostatic bypass is incorporated. The fluid is trapped until it reaches operating temp so it is recommended that the cooler be replaced if the fluid is contaminated!!!!!

Do not remove the brake band retaining bolt in the case. Only remove the drain plug.

This opening on the X-Type doesn't go straight through the pan (cover) it is in as it looks like it would from the outside. So this whole cover would have to be replaced even if the battery box wasn't in the way.

The difficult part of checking the level is determing the transmission oil temperature anyway.
