Clatter on startup
I am the new owner of an XE with the Ingenium diesel engine. It has a startup clatter from cold which I am trying to track down.
For the first 30 seconds all is well, then what I can only describe as a clatter develops, this lasts for about 2-3 minutes then just goes away quite quickly.
I had thought timing chain, but if that were the case then timing chain rattle would be apparent all the time, so I managed to change the VCT unit on the exhaust camshaft, this of course comes into play on the critical fast warm up/startup period. The old one seemed ok but I swopped it for a new one anyway.
A Jag specialist said "they all do that" and he helpfully started up a parked XE he had in... and it did, he also said the Evoque with the same engines do it. But being `mechanically sympathetic`, I would like to get to the bottom of it.
It seems to centre around that first start up period when all the emission kit comes into action to get the engine and DPF up to temperature quickly. From a warm start it does it for just a few seconds then normal quiet service is resumed, there are no other symptoms, goes well pulls well, brilliant on fuel etc. .
Would be grateful for any input on this.

Even more puzzling is that I got the opportunity to start up a 2017 R-Sport diesel yesterday from cold, no noises on that one, apart from those that you would expect from a diesel. It had a low mileage of 20000 miles. Wonder if there have been any changes made?
That one was a 180 bhp.
