Default JLR Announces Ingenium 4-Cylinder Petrol Engines for 2017

Jaguar Land Rover announces new Ingenium four-cylinder petrol engines | Autocar
  • 200 HP single scroll turbo
  • 250 HP twin-scroll turbo
  • 300 HP twin-scroll turbo
The 300 HP has been seen in a new F-Type
I assume the 200 & 250 will be options in the XE but would hope the 300 HP would also be an option in XE.
Also not sure how soon these will be on the road. It seems will only be in calendar year 2017, which may mean MY18 introduction vs. a running change.

Not sure what the capacity of the Wolverhampton plant is or what the XE 25t run rate is. Hope they can keep up.

Jaguar announced last year that they were going to double the size of the engine plant in Wolverhampton. Work started in June, but I have no idea how it's coming along.

4 cylinder Jags... things that make you go hmmmm. I wonder if Aston Martin or Maserati is contemplating 4 cylinder engines. I understand why, just not excited, maybe I'm old school. 300hp out of a 4 cylinder engine is nice.

Sorry, but the olde maxims still hold: "there is no substitute for cubic inches".

Settle for a 4 cylinder in a Jaguar and be unhappy...

hmmmm, I got the 177KW 4 pot XE R-Sport for my missus and she is ecstatic with the car. It is pretty quick (0 - 100kph in about 6.5, which is pretty much as fast as my 4.2 V8 XF was), great at passing speed (80kph - 120kph), pretty frugal (around 9l/100km average with mainly city driving) and sounds good from the outside.

Cons are that the engine is a little "surgey" (it has a slingshot type effect under acceleration rather than the directness of the supercharged or NA engines) and it sounds a bit buzzey inside.

Personally I'd rather the supercharged 6, but it would have cost 150% of the price of the 25T. My wife (used to the 5 pot turbo from a series of volvos) truly loves the car and how it is to drive, she actually drives the car for fun rather than as a chore.

So I dont think I am unhappy about the 4 pot, and I love driving the XE as well (if is actually nicer to drive than any Jag I've had, including the f type), though I do get a little wistful about the 6 cyl and if it was only 10 - 20% more, I would have paid the extra in a heartbeat.

"theres no replacement for displacement"

300hp out of a 4pot is pretty impressive, but its definitely pushing the limits of the car with very little room to get more power out of it.

ive had a bmw 328 (4cyl turbo), i could never go back to a 4 cyl car. its not my cup of tea, worst part....it has no soul or sound

I tend to agree. This was my thinking when buying our 25t. Could not justify the Hugh jump in price for the V6. Now the car is run in, the 4 cyl has a lot of flexibility and real "go".
I thought the new Jaguar engine was going to be a 6 Cyl also? I am very happy with "Ford" which is well sorted.

I think there is every intention of producing a 6 cylinder 3 litre version of the engine. I doubt that Ford sell their own unit cheap and in a competitive market segment it makes sense to extend the ingenium range.

If they can get 300 out of 4 cylinders it will be interesting to see the figures for 6.

>I doubt that Ford sell their own unit cheap...

The current 3.0 V6 is an AJ motor and that design is exclusive to Jaguar, so I'm not sure I understand the Ford reference. Yes Ford owned Jaguar when the AJ was developed but I'm sure that design was included when Jaguar was sold to TATA.

Is there confusion between this 3.0 V6 (which is actually a stroked/reduced-bore version of 90-degree 5.0 V8, minus 6 cylinders...) and the old Durtec 3.0 used in the X-Type?

Err, minus 2 cylinders, that is

Seriously, look at the engine sometime. See how "long" the block is? There used to be 2 more cylinders there...

No the confusion is with the 4 cylinder petrol engine. Because that is sourced/licensed from Ford, I thought the 6 cylinder would be too.

Either way it does not change the sentiment. For whatever rason Jaguar will need a new generation 6 cylinder; the best platform for that will be the Ingenium, with 6 * 500 ml litre cylinders.

edit: What really confused me is that Jaguar had no engine plant of its own until the Wolverhampton facility was built and this definitely only produces Ingenium engines.

I seems that Jaguars variant of the V6 is actually produced at Ford's Bridgend plant in Wales in a 'factory within a factory' consisting of dedicated Jaguar production lines staffed by dedicated Jaguar staff. I would guess there is a flow of money from Jaguar to Ford somewhere along the line.

I recall reading an article a few months ago that the new Jaguar produced engine will start as a 4 diesel, then petrol, then it will be made as a 6 and produce up to 500 HP..
Unfortunately they apparently will source future V-8's from BMW and in all cases the fabulous super charged engines will all be gone and it will be turbo's only.
Lawrence.

Yes that will be a shame, though the BMW twin turbo V8 sounds epic with the smaller bore, and it would be nice to get one into a pretty Jag.

But having a german engine in a british car just doesnt sit well with me, notwithstanding my german heritage.
