Timing Chains Anyone? 2018 XE S
2018 XE S. Bought in April of this year 2024 with 37,111 miles. Its now at 45,300 miles and I have an extended carmax warranty. Had heard some startup noise and thought it was the supercharger coupler. While it did some some slight slack and could use the solid upgrade - they found the noise I was hearing WAS......... TIMING CHAINS. The timing chains are loose. Dear Lord.... that timing chains before 30k miles in both my 2012 XKR and now 2018 XE S. Geesh!!
nope runs fine no issues. This is not unheard of but at the same time happened quite early. Like I said my 12 xkr had failure and after replacement it’s been good for near 100k miles.
It's concerning to me, being a bit of a fleet owner. I knew about the 2010-2014 early timing chain issues and hoped 2016 up would be more reliable. The motor is not terribly quiet out of the box so I was counting on getting the disagree light as the early warning to catastrophic failure.

This was definitely a surprise to me. Regarding my 2012 XKR built in Sept 2011 - When the timing chain tensioner failed I got the "CHAT CHAT CHAT" sound. They didn't specifically say I was getting any chain noise apart from tensioner failure causing it to rattle on startup. This they are saying has "Chain Noise" and that the chain is loose. I did not experience any startup chatter but did feel the car was noisy on startup, and that after warming up there was a "scratchy noise" to the engine...which I felt could be the supercharger rubbing a bit or worn out?! They did say there was a bit of play in the supercharger but not bad- it could use the coupler replaced. But the noise I described they said was chain noise and they found the chains to be loose.
