Default Tire questions

I am looking to get 19" Rims so i can put winter tires on my 2018 XE S
currently have the 20" rims.
both sizes seem to be staggered
one company i talked to recommended going 235/40/R19 all around for winters, was wondering if anyone knew if that would work?
or do i have keep the staggered fit?

They should work just fine. If it were me, I'd drop down to a 225/45/18 for a winter tire.

I don't think you have to/want to keep staggered set of rims for the winter. Also, consider 18 if you can clear calipers - more rubber and less rim is almost always better in the winter.

I would keep the oem wheel sizes so the AWD doesn't act weird. Not saying it will, but why take the chance? Plus, correct size wheels are worth more to the next guy.

I would stick with 20" if you can find, but you might be good with the 19", depending on your calipers (not sure if they're different on the 2018 S from the 2017 R-Sport).

I usually drop down a size for winters. My 2017 AWD R-Sport came with the staggered 19" venoms, so I opted for 235/45 R18 all-round (originally was going to be 225/45 R18 as carpenter75 suggested above, but those wouldn't meet the load requirements in the rear of the car, so we went slightly wider). Unfortunately, when the tires and rims arrived, they barely cleared the rear calipers and couldn't clear the front, so back they went.

I have a set of Nokians on order now, 235/40 R19 - not my first choice on size but the best I could find. There doesn't seem to be a lot of selection of winter tires that fit this car. I found Michelin X-Ice in a more suitable size (though I forget what size it was), but I never had great luck with those on previous cars, so I settled on the Nokians. Hopefully these fit. I'm excited to try these.

Good luck avinaash, and let us know what you end up doing!

i looked around and it doesnt seem like i can get 20" winter tires for the XE

i bought a set of 19" braelin rims and the pirelli winter sottozero series III tires from 1010tires and i should get them within 2-4 weeks - bought them in 225/40/R19 and 255/35/R19

i would assume the clearance for the calipers would be the same from the r-sport to the s - but i know the S has the 350mm ones. not sure if they are thicker as well or just longer. 1010tires has confirmed online they will work - but they will do the installation so we will see upon arrival.

i am trying to avoid buying a set of 19" venom's and tires through the dealer as it will cost 35% more than these ones

Alexstrsza - i hope the Nokians fit !!

For winter you typically don’t want staggered as wider rear tyres won’t grip as well in snow. And if you downsize the wheel and upsize the tyre so the overall outer diameter is the same then it can’t make any difference to traction control, electronics etc

If you can find a 19inch that goes over the calipers I would strongly recommend it. The 20inch wheels are fragile and bend easily in winter potholes. I tried for my XF but the front brakes are too big so am stuck with 20inch wheels for winter tyres and it’s a hassle

What are your current tyre sizes (full specs)? - I’m surprised you can’t find winter tyres for the 20inch wheels

went with braelin rims- gun metal grey in 19" offset and pirelli winter sottozero 3 tires

i am quite happy with them and love the ride with the ticker rubber.
