Default 2018 XF, Steering rack replacement

Long time reader, first time poster here. I have a problem with a steering rack on my 2018 XF (car was in accident before), so I want to replace it. I got used steering rack in good condition (it has same part number on it at least) and now I'm wondering if I need to do some "programming" of this new steering rack after installation. Topix does not mention anything about programming steering rack or car ECU after replacement. Did anyone perform such replacement before?

Car was made for US market if it matters — it was imported to Ukraine. I cannot go to the dealer right now unfortunately. I'd really appreciate your help.

Thanks

Hello and Welcome!!

I had to rub my eyes when I looked at your profile and saw Country: UA.. !!

Can't believe you are working on a steering rack in the middle of an invasion?!

From the Reuters clips, it looks like the south and east are getting pounded by Putin..

Are you in the western part?
How is daily life there?
Best Wishes for you and your family..

As far as Topix, do you have the full €1,800 version with all of the installation pdf's and the service bulletins included?

With no variable steering settings on our x260's, I would hope the replacement rack will be plug-n-play?

Appreciate your quick reply. I bought an access to Topix for an hour and saved PDFs related to the steering rack removal/installment. It does not mention anything about calibration/tuning, so I assumed it's plug-n-play as well, but would be nice to be sure. Biggest fear is that it wouldn't work and I end up with bricked car without any way of fixing the software, which isn't the best thing given the circumstances..

Having working car is better than having car with weird steering problems, so I have to do something it. Good thing steering rack arrived before the war.

I'm in south. My city is holding pretty well for now. My city isn't bombed much, but hearing air raid sirens few times a day is annoying. People are pretty much used to the air raid sirens though. Daily life is mostly sitting at home, occasionally going to the supermarket to see half-empty shelves. Overall I believe Ukraine will hold it.

It seems I cannot send/receive PMs. Probably because I just registered. Anyway, thanks for your tip! I'll try to contact NBCat once I can write PMs.

@bobone, I'm so sorry you're having to go through this nightmare of Putin's making. I pray you and your loved ones remain safe!

I have not had the need to replace a steering rack on an X260, so I'm not entirely sure if there is any programming involved or not. What is the reason for having to replace the steering rack?

Hello @NBCat, thank you for reply and wishes. Car was in accident and it feels like steering motor was damaged. Steering rack has no visible signs of damage. It worked perfectly fine until cold weather. At this moment there's a crackling sound coming from steering motor when I turn the wheel. Also occasionally steering wheel and front wheels are start vibrating (both wheels are turning left-right at high frequency with small amplitude). When it happens car still can be steered thankfully and steering wheel becomes very light. The only reason I can think of is damaged steering motor which goes crazy and causes these vibrations. Interesting thing that there's no any warning/error lights on the instrument panel.

Did you check the suspension and wheel rims for damage as they can cause the condition you're describing?

Glad to hear you're staying safe!

I replaced rims after the accident, suspension is OK. The thing is, vibration does not stop after stopping the car. I mean, I put it in Park, but that steering wheel and front wheels vibration is still there. Vibration stops once I turn the engine off and no vibration if I turn the engine back on after that.

If the vibration or shaking is still present when the car is standing still, that would not be an issue with the steering.

Did you check the engine mounts following the accident?

Hm. I believe they are okay, but I'll double check when I get a chance.

So it seems steering rack on Jag XF x260 is plug-n-play! Took my car to the local car service, they replaced it without problem. Thanks everyone for help!
